Re: Pulling the trigger on some studio monitors. Help!
got the Equator D8's a few hours ago, and HOLY CRAP, I instantly made a huge leap in doing mixdowns. It's taking some time to break them in but I went back and listened to some of my older tracks that I made like 6 months ago and I can see glaring problems with them and knew exactly how to remedy them. I realize some of my mid range basses were as much as 10 db too quiet at times! Stuff I never picked up on with my other speakers. Incredible difference. Getting the positioning just right has been a bit of a problem, and I noticed one of the speakers seems to be a bit louder than the other, even with the same settings on them. I believe it may be a cable issue since I noticed one speaker seemed to stand out more than the other. After switching cables between the two speakers the issue seems to follow the cable. I emailed support about a replacement cable. Other than that they seem to be great and the more I listen the better they seem to be getting over the last few hours. Burning in is definitely the thing to do. Overall I'm very happy with these so far!

Ive got the same so know exactly what you mean From what I was told when I bought them they shouldnt need burning in though, they should come ready to go as theyve already gone through the DSP tuning at the factory.Nevs wrote:got the Equator D8's a few hours ago, and HOLY CRAP, I instantly made a huge leap in doing mixdowns. Dude, I'd pick up a pair but I'm afraid those blue lazer beams would burn a hole into my soul.

They only burn a hole into your soul so they can put you in touch with the true frequencies of your music.nowaysj wrote:Dude, I'd pick up a pair but I'm afraid those blue lazer beams would burn a hole into my soul.
And Nowaysj, dude, living in the States one has no excuse not to own a pair of Equator Ds. They are fucking dirt cheap for what you get.
Equator D series...still one of the best purchasing decisions I've ever made for my music. Big ups Nevs, you'll love working on them. I don't know how to describe working on them compared to my KRK rokits. Its like I have to think less, I just do...and my mix downs are better.

Yeah, I'm defo at the end of my chain with the krk's. See I'd probably want the 8's, and those are expensive. I have 5's now, and the base disappears. I used to have the krk sub, but sold it, and sorely, sorely miss it. It is not just sub representation that is missing, it changes the rhythmic feel of lines, as the little 5's don't show the start and end of low notes, if I'm making any sense.
How are these 5's at bass, compared to the krk rockits?

Re: Pulling the trigger on some studio monitors. Help!
I went from Rokits 6s to D5s so there was just less low end in general. But my experience was that the d5s were tighter and less boomy so I'm actually getting a tighter mix in the lowend. You'd probably want your sub or the d8snowaysj wrote:Yeah, I'm defo at the end of my chain with the krk's. See I'd probably want the 8's, and those are expensive. Yeah mate, gonna require some life changes before the 8's come my way. Tascam 48 AND a mixer first!
Re: Pulling the trigger on some studio monitors. Help!
the blue LED's are actually just a little too bright haha, especially in the dark. i was thinking about just coloring over them with a sharpie marker to see if that would dim them at all. but they match my mechanical keyboard which also glows bright blue so i've just left it because it looks so cool.
Re: Pulling the trigger on some studio monitors. Help!
Electrical tape mate. Actually one of the things I like about the krk's... just a dim kind of light. I don't need vibrating piercing led's burning in my face 14 hours a day. Anybody that would do that, as a designer, is suspect in my opinion. Not joking on this one.
Re: Pulling the trigger on some studio monitors. Help!
It's amazing what I was missing, I listened to my old mixes and immediately could tell what was wrong with them! Increased the quality of the mix ten fold in about 5 minutes withfragments wrote:They only burn a hole into your soul so they can put you in touch with the true frequencies of your music.nowaysj wrote:Dude, I'd pick up a pair but I'm afraid those blue lazer beams would burn a hole into my soul.

The burn in issue, I'm noticing the volume problem less and less the more I use them. I don't know if it's because I'm getting used to the sound or not, but they are sending me a replacement cable regardless.
I'm in love with these speakers
The extended low end is wonderful, I can balance my sub a lot better and it goes down to 44 HZ, which is honestly as low as I would need it go. I don't really produce boomy hip hop stuff

now get rid of the foam stands and get isoacoustics, it's a MAJOR upgrade

Never did i think a stand could make so much difference, these are just genius... even on top of other stands!
Sympatheically moving with the speaker makes these even better than mounting on solid concrete blocks
Re: Pulling the trigger on some studio monitors. Help!
The foam came with the speakers, I also have some auralex Mopads in my closet but I figured I would use what they gave me since its just the right size. After I move, I plan to get some actual speaker stands and no have the speakers on the table at all. But for now ill save the $$$ and use what I got. Thanks for the tip!difference wrote:now get rid of the foam stands and get isoacoustics, it's a MAJOR upgrade
Also going to invest in building a little acoustic treatment that lll be able to take with me to future homes. Probably just some simple acoustic panels at the first reflection points and maybe some bass traps if I can afford it. That's all on the agenda for the coming months!
