I had this really cute photo in Waitangi inside a wharenui (meeting house). I didn't know I was not supposed to take photos because someone (it was Shum!!!) did not warn me. So I went ahead and had a photo shoot by myself with the carvings while he was outside roaming the treaty ground. Even posted on FB as a default photo and got told to take it down (with a bit of force). So I did. It might not be a big deal for us outsiders because we look at something beautiful and we want to share it but for a collective people with very strong values and practices (concept of mana and tapu), it is a strange idea. When you're surrounded with the culture itself, it'll probably make more sense.
