Re: what is contemporary art today - 2013
so - does the internet give you added remote access to people you normally wouldn't have encountered...
or does it stagnate real time movement and amalgamation...both physically
and in the broader sense economically...
or is it a fail safe in the event of both...cause and effect being debatable
Did someone orchestrate the internet as a depression/revolution diffuser
in lieu of a planned economic takeover.
That's my conspiracy theory of the day.
Some art in that I'm sure - somewhere...
bored.
I can find stuff to do - but my mind is bored - It's just spinning with illusions.

I think I'm suffering overactive catharsis...
today and every other week I suppose...
narcotics
...proper scream into the void day...

This is some of my work:

Re: what is contemporary art today - 2013
for what its worth the rough idea behind those white paintings (the ones by rauschenberg anyway) is that stuff like the viewers shadow reflecting on the surface and ambient light/noise bouncing off them is what creates the piece. direct inspiration for Cage's 4'33"
Re: what is contemporary art today - 2013
Word Words.
Rauchenberg has been an influence on me. I didn't really realize how much until I started doing my first canvases recently. I've had this latent painter thing going on but never pursued it because I was doing music instead.
I am feeling the whole "neo-dadaist" tip that those guys were on.

collage is very satisfyingmks wrote:Word Words.
did a series from 1994 to 2008,
the most refined taking 3-6 months each
& done while listening to ds mixes
apart from glue, it's all recycling
images acquire new meaning in context
or create highly interpretable syntheses
that at best are immersive and movie-like
unlike the example above,
the individual images and textures
became increasingly melded
with lots of time spent on smooth transitions
so that newly-perceived edges
arise within the constituent images,
over time, breaking down initial impressions
to reveal mutable subvisions

Right now I am exploring mixed media that is part collage and part paint.
I like that idea that you pointed out of re-contextualization of images to create a new image.
Re: what is contemporary art today - 2013
A year ago I stumbled upon the collages of Carl Plate (1938-76).
He lived near here.
My collages seem to quickly move thru his development
then evolve further,
inheriting his explorations of technique
to delve deep into ambiguity.
But no-one integrated collage into painting like Brett Whitely
...check his work out...an exacting draughtsman of liberation.

Yeah - really scary if you're a female...
It's like being told you're not real...
You're just the psychic manifestation of another man...

Exploring new technologies is always going to have it's place...
That's called - State of the Art...
Avante Garde I think is more representing the spirit of the age...
which may or may not be - in part- "state of the art"- but is more open mediumistically.
But I'm just making this up from my experience - I'm not even that deep into any scene
I just look at stuff coming through the media and some things speak to me
and some things speak to me in bad ways
and some things I'm clueless about - but I'm sure they will reveal over time
and somethings remind me of other things
and some things I spit out almost immediatly
and some things I have to try again
I've been fighting a lot these last 15 years.
This must be a mid-life crisis.
This is where I go buy that red corvette...right!...start shamelessly cougarin'
