Romanians & Bulgarians to claim UK benefits from January

How do I claim benefits when I get to Britain? Romanians demand help from job agencies in the UK

  • Romanians and Bulgarians will be entitled to certain UK benefits from January
  • Job agencies are said to be bombarded with people asking how to claim
  • British companies are advertising on Romanian websites saying 'find out if you are entitled'
  • More than 6,000 unemployed EU migrants currently live in Britain

Recruitment firms are being inundated with requests from Romanians about how they can claim benefits in Britain.

From January, residents of Romania and Bulgaria – two of Europe’s poorest countries – will be entitled to travel to the UK. They will be able to claim the same benefits and NHS care as other EU citizens. As a result, job agencies say they are being bombarded with requests from many who want to know how they can make claims.

One consultancy, based in Birmingham, said it had turned away dozens who wanted to know which of the UK’s generous state hand-outs they were eligible for. Adrian Pop, the firm’s managing director, said: ‘People are calling me asking “how do I claim benefits?”.’ Mr Pop, who is Romanian-born, warned many would be attracted to Britain by the benefits alone.

He said some agencies were offering to help Romanians claim benefits in return for a slice of the money. ‘Some Roma families will come to the UK with seven or eight children and claim £3,000 a month,’ he said. ‘But this is the system that Britain has created.’

He added many would claim to be self employed so they can get a National Insurance number, before simply claiming benefits.

‘There are forums where people talk about it. There are also adverts for companies which help them claim benefits,’ he said. ‘It is giving all Romanians a bad name in England.’

Note to the EU from your big brother: Only 11 states in the US produce any net benefit to the union, the other 39 states suck the tit. Enjoy.

Enjoy further, when those 39 economically unviable states start dictating policy... policy based in large part on their avoidance of education.

Like I said, enjoy.

2.49 million as of start of July figures released at start of October.

But as far as the red top media would lead people to believe, immigrants who come to the UK for benefits are thieving scroungers, whereas UK people who are unemployed are just inevitable byproducts of a decadent benefits system in desperate need of an overhaul.

Yeah, not sure if the US is in the right place to be giving out advice on social welfare reform policies right now, let's be honest.

im going to imagine the common argument to this is "it starts with 6k, then before you know it, ITS 6 MILLION"

Depending on who you talk to, all the parties are at fault;

Labour started it
Tories perpetuated it then tried to dismantle it (1906 NVR4GET)
Lib Dems did nothing about it
UKIP want it but don't want people on it to be able to spend their benefits in alcohol, nicotine or satellite TV
BNP want to burn everyone who claims it who isn't a local

As the eu continues to centralize, it won't be 6k immigrants claiming benefits, the economically productive states will be required to totally support the economically unproductive states. No one will have to immigrate anywhere.

Are we talking a self perpetuating prophecy of a single EU 'entity' which issues benefits for one & all?

Don't know if it is self perpetuating, or a prophecy, but is it not the fate of all unions to devolve into inequity?

Aside from centralised governance, the EU as a free trade zone is far more useful to exist than to not.

Can't UK people go to Romania and still keep UK welfare entitlement for up to 6 months then?

Funnily enough, the Daily Mail article didn't investigate this possibility.

Given that most of Europe is still very much in recovery mode, the dissolution of the free trade zone would go a long way towards crippling the exports of some countries. Countries would cut back import to focus on domestic product (a cheaper alternative, given the above), then there would be a rolling of contagion across the continent as exports dried up.

And we all ride the spiral down.

haven't they already shown that EU immigrants put more into the tax system than they take out? Surely this will be the same just scaled up a bit?

Ahhh, I see, it's immigrant benefit claimants that are the problem with the European economy. It's all so obvious now.

Not everything will result in the worst possible sci-fi dystopian future, nowaysj; though I know accepting that would make your Internet posting style a little less exciting, things will probably just rumble on like they always do. Europe was built for incredibly good reasons (i.e. so WW3 doesn't start here) and those reasons are still and will still be relevant for the next century at least. Having poor states "sucking at the teet" should be a source of pride to the rich nations extending basic human dignities, not a source of jealous and selfish sniping at the economically and geographically disadvantaged.

Cutting people off never solves anything - the only solution to the world's economic crisis is creating enough economic wealth to go around - create work, open factories, shore up food production, build railways, build power stations... you can't prepare for the future simply by stripping the past of its hard-won comforts; the future is supposed to encompass them.

The only problem I see is jobs not paying a living wage, benefits pay less and the JSA regime now is fucking terrible for British claiments, let alone claimants who can't speak fluent English.

The major problem is housing, most of the new comers are gonna need 'affordable' housing, so social housing or they are gonna be over-occupying which brings it's own problems.

Edit: this is on the guardian only today...
