pitch bending in ableton
if you had an audio sample of a pad that you'd like to use in a track and you want to change the pitch that the pad plays so that it bends how would u do that in sampler or simpler?

Re: pitch bending in ableton
Automating the transpose?
Depth is a delusion, the deeper you look the less you see.

Re: pitch bending in ableton
hm if you play one note you can set it to voices 1 and than glide and move between the notes (dunno if it works with more than one voice )
or you can automate the pitch in the piano roll segment thingy and you click on the small e at the bottom besides the note sign
a new envelope segment allows you to change the pitch just if you used a pitchwheel on a keyboard

Re: pitch bending in ableton
if you're using simpler, then you can just go into the envelope section of your midi clip and choose pitch bend...
Re: pitch bending in ableton
I still think that you should try automating the transpose.. sick stuff

This got me curious as to whether or not there would be any tonal differences between the two, so I opened up ableton and tried it both ways and bounced them to audio to A and B the two. I found that there were no tonal differences between the two, but if you were trying to pitch bend the pad a certain intervallic value, I would definitely automate the transpose like Icetickle said. That way you can see how many steps your bending up or down to as opposed to the pitch bend function which is just a percentage value.
Re: pitch bending in ableton
That makes no sense. Transposition automation and pitch bend are not the same thing and should not give you the same result. You must have done something else you didn't know about if you got the exact same result. Notice how in simpler, you can change the tune by transposing by steps (+1, +2, -1, -2, etc) or you can detune by cents (50 cents in one step). If you were to automate the cents in dentunage, then that might give you something that sounds closer to pitch bend because it would sound much more continuous, but if you are automating your transposition, then you will hear distinct, discrete tones that won't sound like a continuous pitch bend.zosomagik wrote:This got me curious as to whether or not there would be any tonal differences between the two, so I opened up ableton and tried it both ways and bounced them to audio to A and B the two. Try it. I wouldn't have thought it sounded the same, but I tried it and they sound the same. And if they are different, it's not enough to really notice.
Re: pitch bending in ableton
Well I've transposed and pitch bended things hundreds of times, but I went and gave it a shot in simpler anyway, and I can see why it might sound similar if you do it a certain way. If you transpose by like a span of 48 steps over just a second or two, that is quick enough where you won't really notice the difference between between that and pitch bend. But usually when people transpose things, they go don't go that far that fast, and just use pitch bend to accomplish that effect. So if you transpose by like 6 steps over the course of 10 seconds, it will probably sound very discontinuous. But hey fuck rules right? If you like the sound then stick with it.
Re: pitch bending in ableton
That's what it all comes down to, if it sounds good. I didn't notice a difference, and you're right it was only like a bar long clip I compared. I personally would prefer to use transpose so I can know how many steps I'm shifting up or down. Different strokes for different folks my friend.

Create a new MIDI track - load up Sampler
Take the audio track of the pad you dig and drag/drop it into the Sampler window.
From there your possibilities become endless. Sometimes, it makes sense to EQ (harmonically) before you start drag/dropping and loading into Sampler.
If you need more help let me know.
