Not bad this one. But not great either.
Does have a wicked soundtrack though.

Festen (The Celebration)

I don't have the words for this right now.... Suffice it to say that this is one of a handful of films that i'd give a perfect 10/10 score.

Its brilliant yeah - but don't expect vinterbergs other films to hit that mark though.
A shame as he was such a prospect as a director.
The reason is probably that Lars Von Trier had more than a hand up his bum, then.

Trier wrote the script and vinterberg directed Dear wendy which is worth a watch.
Kind of like a new attempt at Bugsey Malone (that gangster film with kids playing the parts) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342272/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_6

Ah, ok - I was advised by, I think Ronin, to watch it then The Hunt.
I'll check out Dear Wendy though too. Nice one :Q:

Im not sure if that was because my bar was set waaaaayyy lower than normal because of Com Truise but it held my intrest. Few twists here and there but it went abit wonky towards the last half an hour.
I lost concentration for a moment towards the end and have no idea really how it finished. never mind.

I hated the hunt. It's actually detrimental to the discussion of pedophilia and where the responsibility lies. He mocks the profession of childcare and completely rids them of authority on the subject. It's particularly bad when you consider how elegant it was dealt with in 'festen'.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Image
I watch a lot of films but don't always write about them on here so don't think I hand out big scores at a whim. This story of a man's 40-odd years of military service gets 9/10 from me and only drops a point because they omit certain dirty tricks the British got up to in their various military campaigns.
It's a long old film at 2hrs 43minutes but, imo, is really quite captivating all the way through. The central messages are essentially timeless and apply as much today as they did in 1947 when the film was made. Unfortunately, the stuffiness of the main character and the times it's set in may well deter the very people whom would benefit from it's message from watching. But then, the stuffiness of the main character is the whole point - what he was like when he was younger and what made him into the man we are first presented with....

Some guy on imdb wrote a bit about it which is worded better than I can so here it is
"As evidenced by the film's title, Pressburger's script does deal in a very generalized way with issues of Life and Death, but he carries his vision into the realm of the abstract, and he does so in circular fashion. More specifically, he explores a younger generation's brash, rebellious attitude towards their elders; and then examines how that attitude becomes more restrained, more conservative with the passage of time – until, as that generation ages, they become so "traditional" that, in the end, when their notions of honor and ethics have become obsolete in relation to the dominant society, they abstain from collaborating with community and, in a sense, they cease to really exist at all. And in the end, Death is really all there is."

Anyway, I fully recommend this one 9/10

I have and it is, although I seem to remember not thinking all that highly of it until the last few moments of the film which brought it all together.. There's a few films like that for me - Chinatown is one, Amores Perros another.

Yeah they are both pretty brilliant films no doubt. Chinatown is probably my favourite film, if not solyaris but really it's lethal weapon 1 lol.

I'm a massive fan of the remake of Solaris. I'm sure the original is better, everyone raves on about it, but I have a bit of a crush on Natascha McElhone. (She's a weird one - some films she looks amazing, others a total hag). I've got the original waiting for me to watch (never seen it) but i've only recently seen Stalker and think a little time is needed before I tackle another Tarkovsky.

Incidentally, my favourite film is by far Apocalypse Now. Bit of an obvious choice maybe, but hey, it's a great film!

A N is definitely one of the most impressive productions and important films - but I'm not sold on the whole Brando bit in the end. I love the build up to that point and its not bad or anything, its just that they rely to much on him being this larger than life actor.

haha -i actually have stalker waiting -and been waiting for the right time for awhile.

Is she that googly eyed elf bitch from fallic calibration ? if so - yeah agreed.
The daughter is probably the least attractive person on earth

solyaris has an aesthetic side, like with blade runner, that you get to see where everyone got their inspiration from, but still it's stronger than what it inspired.
