Where to find random percussion samples

Post by mromgwtf » Fri Nov 08, 2013 7:41 am

Not really percussion, but these random metallic kind of hits. For an example look at machine gun 16 bit remix intro. I was looking on freesound but didn't find anything interesting. I know the best way would be to go outside with a microphone and record them myself, but I don't have a microphone so yeah.

Amazing stuff but by no means cheap.

get a tv show like the wire or oz or sopranos or summat and when youre watching record on audacity, then pay attention during and you'll notice a load of cool hits, like car doors slamming gunshots w/e

plus you'll watch a good tv show as well

Yeah

I kept a notepad for a while that I would write down bits from movies with interesting sounds in and tracks on records that had clean single hits that would be usable.

However I've forgotten about doing it and lost the notepad :( :(

Should start again

Absolutely no, chromaphone can't go that advanced.

I was also thinking about extracting audio files from games, for example you can use GCFScape to extract audio files from games like TF2/HL and other games using source engine.

Yeah I know that, I use windows, and I use edison + stereo mix for recording anything from my computer.

I recently got a pack of sounds ripped from Red Alert - it has a stupid number of things in it, more than you'd think if you played the game, from gun/weapon sounds to lines of speech to foley and background noises.

I think ripping sounds from games is the way to go. One game = one sample pack, seems good.

what are you talking about? have you used chromophone? it can make any kind of drum and other types of percussion like mallets, bells, and other metallic noises. the possibilities for percussion sounds are endless with chromophone's coupling slider.

Sorry for being confusing but I think you didn't read the OP.

Can chromaphone synthesize a sound similar to a car falling from 50m on the ground? Or a can being stomped? These sounds are really advanced and atonal, chromephone is made for tonal percussion sounds.

Well first of all the only thing you really specified in the OP was "metallic hits," and chromaphone can definitely make those. also chromaphone isn't limited to "tonal" percussive sounds. it can make dissonant sounds that don't have any a specific note plus you can detune pitches for dissonant sounds.

I hear a lot of mw2 noises here as well. The snare is sometimes layered with a gunshot, you can hear an obvious machine gun shooting noise, weapon switching noises and other stuff.

not to throw gasoline on the fire, but he did say that he should "go outside and record them himself" so I think it's legit to assume that he didn't mean the sound of cars falling from 50 m... unless he planned to actually drive a car off the top of a parking garage and put mics at the bottom to record it :cornlol:

That was just an example of what noises I'm after.

There's lots of stuff out there for those who don't want to record their own:

Here's a couple of Kontakt sets from www.sampleism.com, all sampled at multiple velocities and with round-robin alternate samples, making for very playable instruments.

Pot Lid: a nice melodic hit of a pot lid[ (£4.00)
Soundcloud

Stainless Kitchen Vibes: the sound of a stainless steel cutlery holder (£3.50 Soundcloud

Jam Jar: The sound of snapping a Mason Jar Lid (£3.50) Soundcloud
