Re: New Death Grips on Soundcloud
This is why i love Death Grips, just casually releasing an album out of nowhere.

Re: New Death Grips on Soundcloud
after a few listens, i'd say it's really good but not enough mc ride to be amazing
Re: New Death Grips on Soundcloud
Yeah, seemed like a lot more instrumental/one sample tunes than before.

i dont get the hype around dg... i admit i only heard a bit of em, but i remember listening to the first album and just thinkin it was kinda shit. i like the one song where they sampled pink floyd but other than that i just think its kinda too 'out there' (in a bad way) for me

Tbh ive wanted a death grips release that gave a bit more leeway to the instrumentation so im looking forward to hearing this
Re: New Death Grips on Soundcloud
From my perspective - I started listening to hip hop in one of its golden ages, the late eighties and early nineties when I was a teen/young adult. There was conscious shit, the gangsta thing was just starting to take off and was really raw and aggressive, and overall there was just more of a range of styles, attitudes, etc. Over the last 20 years it's all been cooked down into a dumb formula largely - there hasn't been a whiff of innovation sonically or thematically (for the most part.)kaili wrote:i dont get the hype around dg... i admit i only heard a bit of em, but i remember listening to the first album and just thinkin it was kinda shit. i like the one song where they sampled pink floyd but other than that i just think its kinda too 'out there' (in a bad way) for me
Then I heard the Exmilitary Mixtape. My faith in the power of hip hop to innovate was restored, the music was raw, lean, and challenging, and yeah - samplespotting was fun again. (@ Jizzman - Pink Floyd sample source[/url], for instance, a classic tune everybody should know.)

OK, so far my take on this album is: different drugs. Like, they're getting exposed to some high grade, exotic shit now. No more dirty street drugs. We're talking pills, liquid acid, 2c-I, stuff like that. The sound is still raw and arguably even more challenging, but it's not as lean [to my ears.] There's a little more indulgence. Gonna have to listen again a few times, but that's my take right now.
Re: New Death Grips on Soundcloud
The Money Store got a little more developed both in song writing and in tighter production values. You might prefer it. The rapping is more structured and easier to take in too.kaili wrote:i dont get the hype around dg... i admit i only heard a bit of em, but i remember listening to the first album and just thinkin it was kinda shit. i like the one song where they sampled pink floyd but other than that i just think its kinda too 'out there' (in a bad way) for me
Haven't heard this one properly yet so can't judge. Like a couple tracks I heard though. Didn't like another though

Heh. He's got you there, must admit.Phigure wrote:your name is jizzman stfu
But as for the tunes; not sure how I feel about em yet. Also seem like a continuation of the trend of indulgence replacing rawness.
