Bigups have their cons and pros. I wanted a 'like button' too, until I figured it would turn into a popularity contest. It's also an easy way to figure out which of your posts have activity or may have responses.
Don't care if it stays or not or if you can opt out. I just try not to participate in it because I've always had an aversion to popularity contests, but I know that's not what it's about for everyone who uses it so meh.

How about you can big up, but it doesn't show the number of times you've been bigged up, like over there on the side by your avatar. I like bigging up people. It is just a way of laughing along with someone.

keep big up button, remove ups add more bigs, remove recognition and popularity and add more recognition.
