He sounds hilarious. Covertly film him talking and start a YouTube series.magma wrote:The talkative Australian that sits next to me has clearly run out of drivel to spout... he's taken to reading out stock prices... for stocks NONE OF US OWN.

Entering day three of my tobacco and cannabis free life.
I'd completely forgotten about the cracked out dreams.
I don't think my bodies sure what to do either. Whenever I stop smoking weed my appetite disappears, but stopping smoking cigs tends to increase it. Feeling hungry but struggling to eat at the same time

I'd been blazing every day for so long it was just silly, I don't plan on never smoking weed again, just could probably do with a break. And some more money.
I decided I need a break from baccy too, cause I bought a pack last week sometime and it was gone in two days and that's just a bit silly
It's mostly a money issue, I've never had anxiety or paranoia from weed, unlike some of my mates had.
Been so bored past couple of days though, I've cleaned the house all over, done all the washing up etc.

Having that moment where you're listening to a tune you made a year ago...
Obviously it sounds technically shit compared to what I make today, but the arrangement feels so much better. Much more natural and unrestrained. It's like the more I produce, the more un-musical and fucked up my creative process becomes. I barely knew what a fucking sine wave was last year, but I could crank out stuff that was more music and less a grid in a DAW.
I think I've seen people on DSF report similar things before...does anyone have any insight into wether that feeling of "I've become worse" is legit or not? Do people just have a tendency to not notice the musicality in the stuff they're currently obsessing over?

i need to get into the habit of writing music faster and settling on the good ideas rather than wasting time and frustrating myself with the bad ones

Yeah for the past 4 days I've really wanted to make something but when I actually go start it it sounds like poo

If you switch the tempo you have to find other breaks and you have to get into another groove. That's just an easy short term 'boost'.
Really though, you have to get into the habit of both finishing tracks completely, finding joy in doing that and at the same time have those sessions where you just enjoy fucking around like you probably used to.
Then if you can get into the habit of making useful stuff for later when you just fuck around- it sort of comes full circle and you will be enjoying it almost every time.
Not only because you look forward to using those weird bits you came up with, but because there's already something to live up to. Just an idea.

If you don't enjoy it and making a tune is winding you up, just stop for a bit. I tend to produce in massive batches but go months without touching anything. If you're not trying to make it your career, why do it if it's racking you off? Just watch some tutorials, listen to some new music and don't try and force yourself to do something, cos it ain't gonna happen.
The world doesn't NEED more music, and yours will get better if you're not stressing it.

Re: The things that pissed you off today ™ thread
Should you finish tracks even after the real creative spark is gone, just so you can learn the cold hard process of *finishing something*? Not a rhetorical question btw.

Re: The things that pissed you off today ™ thread
yh init i usually wait until i really want to produce to open ableton, like i'll force myself to go weeks without doing anything and then when i do actually start making something i'm really motivated.
and yes try finish everything you make cos arrangement and mixing/mastering is the hardest bit imo

Guess there's no definitive answer, but my opinion is nah. All comes to down to what I said. If you're not enjoying it, just leave it. Save the project files and that. I've started a tune, sacked it off because it's annoyed me, came back to it months later and completely rebuilt it from the same blocks into something different.Harkat wrote:Should you finish tracks even after the real creative spark is gone, just so you can learn the cold hard process of *finishing something*? Like I said, if you're not trying to make a job out of it, you've got no responsibility to do it, and you're not enjoying it, why do it?
Re: The things that pissed you off today ™ thread
yeah but if ur starting out surely it's best to practice finishing tunes, otherwise when you do make something good you'll get to the arrangement/mixdown/master and won't have a clue what you're doing.
to get better?garethom wrote: Like I said, if you're not trying to make a job out of it, you've got no responsibility to do it, and you're not enjoying it, why do it?

I didn't know what I was doing for a long time and that shit is unlistenable, but yeah, the creativity and inventiveness was off the chain, well not really, it was just good. But technically, they were all nightmares, and I didn't achieve anything near the sound I wanted. I just didn't know how to do it.Harkat wrote:Having that moment where you're listening to a tune you made a year ago...![]()

Then I went through a phase that is similar to yours, grid master stage, where you understand everything, you understand beats, and note structures, and all the processing that needs to be applied to sounds, etc. And then your music just sucks. Stale, uninventive, because you are doing everything right.
I believe there is the synthesis stage of this dialectic, where the passion and abandon of your early attempts will be amplified and enabled by the grid master, and your tracks will feel great, move well, will be surprising, AND they will sound good, you'll be able to show the listener what you were listening to.
You've just got to get that grid master consciousness to become transparent through hours and hours of repetition, and then you'll find a way to let the little boy back into the studio to totally muck about in a meaningful way. A lot of serious minded punters get stuck at grid master, and never get past that. What they produce objectively sounds good but is meaningless. Don't become self satisfied with a good sound. Just keep going until you are playing and having fun again.
