I've never studied any French/Spanish at any level before moving here, so the way the words and sentences are put together is just flipping me out sometimes.
English and German is so much more literal and straightforward in my mind.

Spanish IS a nightmare tbf, even when you're speaking French. So many exceptions to everything in both languages - but of course, not the same exceptions in each one of them. I'm learning German at the moment and it feels so much easier after ten years of trying to find out the logics of Spanishwub wrote:I've never studied any French/Spanish at any level before moving here, so the way the words and sentences are put together is just flipping me out sometimes.

Re: The things that pissed you off today ™ thread
I've always wanted to learn Spanish. Don't think I'd have a too hard time doing it either, since I spoke 3 languages by the time I was first speaking and learned the fourth one before I was 8.
Think language is a matter of engaging rather than learning. Getting a few basics down is cool, but it's more about just speaking it and being unafraid of fucking up while you're talking to people. Probably gets harder as you get older, though.

German is so easy to learn. I like how they're not afraid of making 25 letter long words just to fill a need for a nounexfox wrote:Spanish IS a nightmare tbf, even when you're speaking French. Sneezed once when eating noodles. Felt odd for the rest of the day, nose wouldn't stop running, eyes were watering. Just before I tried to get some sleep, my nose really started to tickle, my girlfriend told me there was something hanging out of it, pulled out a 3 inch noodle.Nevalo wrote:i hate sneezing while eating ham... it always gets blocked between my nose and mouth

If you sing 'Happy Birthday' in Spanish, it still uses the same tune/rhythm to the English version, but because of the words you're basically singing
Birthday, Happy!
Birthday, Happy!
Birthday, Happy!
Instead of;
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Again, this makes no sense.

yes, but its paramount that you start thinking in spanish if you want to be fluent. like any language, half of the problem is trying to translate everything before you think.wub wrote:Probably something to do with being English.mIrReN wrote:because you're still thinking in English

yeah but you shouldn't make the translation in your head everytime is what I mean lol
if you start thinking (or at least try) in the language you're learning you will become much better at it

I'm starting to read stuff without necessarily translating it first, if that makes sense? Like how things are put together as opposed to their exact meaning.
Re: The things that pissed you off today ™ thread
Indeed, when speaking in another language it's best to think in that language instead of translating it in your head.mIrReN wrote:yeah but you shouldn't make the translation in your head everytime is what I mean lol

also don't think the grammar and the way things are orded/ordened in a sentence are the same
both languages are derived from different sources iirc just think of it as something new that has to be placed in that way in order to sound like your English sentence would
(like learning math +/-)
^ yeah didn't see your post or wouldn't have posted myself fucking lagpc
