Ok gotcha :D

I couldn't count to 10 in Spanish prior to moving here, and with not ever studying French I'm learning a completely different way of structure from the ground up.

Good fun though :)

both languages are derived from different sources iirc just think of it as something new that has to be placed in that way in order to sound like your English sentence would

How far along are you with that? I'm trying to learn too but i'm fucking shite at languages.
Yeah, trying to think in Japanese just sounds like an impossibility for me.

It doesn't help that there are different ways of saying the same thing depending on your age, who you're talking to, their relationship to you and their/your standing in society.

Now that I have a job offer and wont be starting till the new year, for some reason the part of my brain that controls my urges to not waste loads of money has broken.
"oh only £80 for some gigs tickets, might aswell! I mean treat yourself and all that!"
"Ah fuck it buy some champagne, this doesn't happen every year!"
"£30 for that vinyl, bollocks too it! youve got savings!"

Thankfuly ive not hit yes on the gig tickets yet but I think I spent about £150+ on all kinds of crap since friday which is stupid really as I need to move out and have a deposit ready ffs :corntard:

beginner, lvl 1 lol. but i understand a lot of words already. like i can watch japanese tv and figure out (most of the time) whats going on (unless its anything other than kanto dialect)

i love it though, its such a beautiful language and society, all based on bushido.

Yeah i'm trying immerse myself in the language as much as possible but there's only so many anime/samurai/yakuza/fucked up horror films you can watch without going a bit doolally!

"Gennosuke sama!"

I can introduce myself (politely) perfectly but that's about it. You learning to read it too? Fuuuuuck that!

I'm brushing up my French right now with, don't laugh, Duolingo. Pretty handy when studying in Brussels haha.

9 years of French at school and pretty much no one I went to school with all those years can speak French. Incompetent teachers.

I use Duolingo & Memrise every day in addition to the conversation stuff I have at work and the classes I take. Both proper handy for repetition of the basics, IMO :Q:

I think Yakuza films are the least helpful because you just wouldn't talk like that to anyone you're trying to communicate with. It would be like starting every sentence with "Oi, tnuc".

Nev, good luck with that! It gives me a stress headache just thinking about it so :Q:

@Jaydot - no, it's because of that Mike Skinner thread.

It certainly beats the classes I had before. We just learned grammar rules, did excercises (boring ones like doing nothing but verb conjugation etc), learned new rules, exercises and so on and so on. Only 10-20% of what we did was actually speaking French or reading/interpreting texts. Which is exactly the reason why none of us could actually speak French. Duolingo isn't perfect either, but it's getting better (Luis von Ahn is a badman) and the exercises are perfect for getting in touch with the basics and building up a nice foundation. And now I know a lot more French people for practice, watch movies in French, ...

why would I laugh :D probably a good idea and should do it myself! or at least Spanish like I want to

also yes fuck man, got behind FIRST year of ever learning French "you don't really need these 2 chapters" apparantly you need to know how to construct sentences, got behind more & more :(

the way it was taught was quite disheartening too, just memorise it all :') (well what Nils says)

Unfortunately I know some people who are still on the "you can't properly learn stuff online" level and find the whole idea of using Duolingo crazy

One of the Spanish channels every night has 2 And A Half Men, Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, etc...if it's an episode I've seen a lot before, I'll watch it with the Spanish language option.
