It blows them all out of the water in terms of mixing.

Pro Tools/Reason (Multi-rewired) & RTAS plugs is the best scenario...

Thats if you have a spare 6 months to save for Tools...

Oh and VST's use more CPU than rewire...i have a shitty centrino chip on a lappy with 512 RAM & I run at least 20 rewired instruments in any song using Reason and Tools. Its all about optimization...

Mines goes crazy when i try :(

pro tools!

great for mixing not for making the music!
plus, last i heard still required the hardware (so at least an MBox) and hence is an expensive mixing option
plus all the RTAS dedicated plug-ins which make pro tools sound beautiful (eg the Sony eqs) are flippin expensive!!

well said

i'm still using logic 5.5 for pc and i'm perfectly happy with it except for the fact that theres a lot more functionality in the newer mac versions that i get to play with once in a while

indeed...thats why I rewire. But i record alot of my own live instruments so its nice for that. But MIDI in Tools aint much fun. Thats why i still use the reason sequencer for midi, but when i use RTAS plugs you have no choice but to use the midi in tools. It aint that bad but it aint great either, but the mixdowns are magic in tools...get the wavs plugs and the fx expansion VST to RTAS wrapper and you are set.

Serious producers should consider tools, but only if you have a spare 6 months to a year to save for it or have the cash up front. The MBox 2 pro is a great interface...so its worth it i reckon.

There is a reason most studios the world over use Tools.

But I dont have much against logic...i just dont like the interface.

many options..

Post by foodstampz » Fri Sep 21, 2007 8:45 am

If you use fruity loops with a decent asio card and route channels that are very important to a quality outboard mixer than back into a high quality recording program, or even to cd or dat , you wil have great sound quality ..
i know fruity loops has changed incredibly sicne it first came out, but i gave up on it years ago cubase everything always seemed to unprofessional.

i am yet to focus on using programs like sonar and logic to make the beats, i know how effective they are , but i am really into live 6 . since the creative possibilities are endless. im not to happy with the sequencer as of yet , but i think i am missing some details on what i need to achieve in there..
.. so yeah its all options.. but if your using fruity loops on crappy speakers or a bad soundcard you deffinetly wont get the nice clean sound you might or might not want..

now on another tip sonar and 64 bit processing has a really nice sound..
i use an RME fireface800 and they work very well togetehr..
krk monitors.

I run Logic 7 and my mates who use Cubase and my mates who use Cubase have been pretty blown away by Logic when they’ve been round at mine. There are so many integrated plugs and instruments and it’s all designed to work in unison. In that sense, then, it’s seamless. It’s also very clear and simple, but what else would you expect from Apple?

Cubase must have advantages over Logic, of course. But I’m not experienced enough with it to give you any kind of useful information.

Why 'or' when you can have 'and'

I use Reason3 and sometimes Fruity Studio all off the back of Cubase3 as a host.

Im just taking the step from DJing to making my own tracks. Im musically minded but not trained so I still have to build up a lot knowledge. Its interesting that Reason is not mentioned much in this thread, is there any particular beef with it? Mates have told me that things you produce on it sound 'Reasonified' but I'm skeptical of this. Please enlighten me further as its pros and cons...................

Reason used to be piss poor. Version 1, even v2 sounded, frankly, shit, and yeah everything came out of it sounding like it came out of Reason. But in v2.5 they started adding pro-quality FX, and continued into 3. Haven't tried 4 but I imagine it's going the same way. Reason now is as pro as they come, but I guess it can't shake its image.

Beats me why Reason gets as much stick as it does. I've used it a fair bit, never made a proper track on it but I can see the possibilities. I know a dnb producer who's had a couple of tunes released that were just an audio render straight from Reason...

Word. SKC is Reason-only i think, pretty sure most of the Hungarian dnb crew were solely using Reason for a bit, Chris SU etc.

But the synths that you did get, Subtractor and Malstrom, have always been awesome. Malstrom I remember got put into Sound on Sound's top softsynths ever or something, and you can't even use it outside of Reason. I still wish there was a VST loop slicer with the simplicity of Dr Rex.

Reason was never about VSTs, to me it's like people saying "Nah, I'd never buy a Virus, cos it can't load Absynth."

Don't mean to sound like a Reason evangelist, just wish more folk would give it a chance.

Thanks for your responses. I actually started work on a track collaborating with a mate last night. We used reason to get drums and b-line and with fx and compression have got it to sound really big and hard hitting.
Does anyone know how to load up samples (i.e the track comp sample pack) into Reason? Its been a bit problematic thus far but I am still a n00b

Well, there are a lot of reasons you could be hearing something different even though the actual 'sound engines' (which is essentially just something that adds a bunch of numbers together) are the same - there might be settings (eg pan law, output level) with different defaults on different programs. Built in processors like EQs might have different qualities. Different user interfaces might make you work differently and get different results (like the way you often have different sorts of ideas working with a piano roll, a keyboard or some other way of writing tunes even though they're all essentially ways of coming up with a series of notes).

But its also worth remembering that placebo effect is powerful enough to make people recover from serious illnesses because they've been given a sugar pill and told it's an experimental new drug, so it's not unbelievable that your expectations about different bits of software could cause you to perceive a difference where there isn't one.
Still Makes the bangers :P
That's what matters!

reason can be really ill. used to take a ton of effort to make things sound passable in it but it's grown alot. still sounds a lot better when individual parts are bounced out and mixed down in another application, though.

yeah TONS of electronic music has been done only in reason. I think nu:tone is (or was) reason only...

very easy to get a basic idea in reason and really easy to mess w/ it. sound-wise, though, it was always easier to get bigger sounds w/ less effort in other programs.
