but here in Belgium we too speak Dutch so it really doesn't matter that the dutch have once conquered this, or the French or Spanish, we had Dutch way before that
I can get my books on it to get the facts straight but iirc it started from West - Germany to the very North of France (a part of Nord pas de Calais, including what we call West/East-Flanders) earliest reports from our language can be traced to mentionned regions
Funny thing is, our region was "vital" to what we call Dutch these days, this lasted until the Spanish came
it's different as in; we didn't make our own country and decided to take a language from our conquerers, we took our peasant language from back in the day and said fuck you all this is our shit

I remember I had my first 20 euro bill and my mother did that trick of 'tearing' a paper while blowing against the side so it just sounds like it's tearing. She did it a couple of times untill she really tore it. Broke my heart. Now I was back to two 10 euro bills..
