The biggest thing about ADHD that I take issue with is that the whole neutrotransmitter imbalance thing is very speculative. There are no actual tests to see if someone doesn't have enough dopamine/norepinephrine, or has it in the wrong parts of the brain. This goes for most mental illnesses. I do believe that mental illnesses exist, but I think that our understanding/categorization/diagnosing of them is severely flawed because there are no legit tests for neurotransmitter imbalances.

The biggest test that doctors use is they prescribe a med and then if it works, then that means the patient had a mental illness. You give adderall to ANYONE (ADHD or not) and they will report back that they were more focused, had an easier time concentrating, etc. Then doctors think oh there ya go that means he had ADHD. They do the same thing with depression/bipolar/etc.

I also think that in more cases than not, stimulants are more harmful than helpful, even if the patient/doctor thinks they're helpful. You take adderall for a couple years and then whadduyaknow take away the adderall and now your "ADD" is 10x worse than it was before adderall.

Let's get real tho, if it wasn't for the rampant ADHD/mental illness denial in the world (which obv is party caused by the overdiagnosis), there would in all likelihood be more funding for it and more new treatments would arise.

There's so many breakthroughs in the treatment of mental health, but so little money to actually get something done.

Perhaps but I don't think diagnosis practices hinder funding for mental illness research anywhere near the amount that people who deny that the government can/should do things hinder it. Private enterprise is notoriously bad at getting shit like this done in a timely manner. It's up to the knuckle-draggers to let the government step up to the plate.

I mean, would you support govt-funded mental health research?

What if it involved using human clones who had certain parts of their brain changed so they were born and lived with schizophrenia, or other mental illness, so drugs could be tested on them?

^That's a good start although could be improved through the use of clones, also have only robots directly interacting with the test subjects so to reduce researcher distress. I have discussed this with one of my lecturers before lol

Cos with clones you could breed selective traits such as propensity to cancer or heart disease or summin, but yeah immigrants would probably do quite a good job

now that i think about it ur right about the clones. not only would they be good for researching shit, but u could just make a bunch of clones and have them do all the jobs and shit so we can kick it in the shade while they make us P. utopia unlocked.
