Getting burnt out

Post by Rezzo » Thu Dec 19, 2013 10:50 pm

Wassup guys, just taking a break from a fairly long session of working on one track. I have attention problems so I usually end up taking breaks every hour or so. But this time I sat in front of my PC (apart from getting drinks and shit) for about 6 - 7 hours. Granted to some people that probably isn't long but for me that's a solid session of production. The first 4 hours or so were spent on getting down a fairly nice intro for my new track, I then got absolutely caught up on sampling, resampling, chopping and arranging. It got very brutal near the end and I'm now leaning back in my chair thinking bloody hell feels like I've just ran a marathon.

Anyway, I kinda feel burnt out now, like, I could still do more with the track right now if I wanted but I feel kinda dead in my head if you know what I mean? I don't know if it's ear fatigue or what. But yeah I don't really have a point to this thread other than if any other people experience this kinda feeling? Safe.

I am very stubborn with my own music these days. I have power sessions where if I haven't got enough to say "Yeah, thats done but it just needs X" (mainly restructuring, fillers, stuff like that) within an hour I generally don't even save the file and exit out of my DAW and do something else.

If you ain't doing it for a living, no point treating it like a job - if you can't move forward just walk somewhere else. No point creating yourself walls if the reasoning isn't justifiable.

I love making music and nobody can change that about me. I'm not trying to earn a living from it. I just want to get to a level of production where I can safely say, yeah, I'm on that level, if you know what I mean? I don't treat it like a job. Maybe I didn't word the post well, but I was just wondering if people experience a kind of like, throbbing in their head. It kinda FORCED me to take a break. Not everything in life has to pay the bills, sure it would help, does anybody do stuff for fun these days? Seems like that's what your saying, is that I shouldn't go at something 100% just because I don't get money from it? Excuse me if that's not the vibe you're putting out. Cheers for the response.

Your ears should be pretty much 'exhausted' after 3-4 hours without a break.
Maybe if your levels are well low it could work.

I just meant it like, if you get stuck in a tune for a few hours then feel exhausted thats because you actually are, no point forcing yourself.

I didn't mean it bad at all.

If it isn't half way done an hour into it, I exit FL without saving and come back tomorrow.

But hey man it's fine if you take 7 hours just to START a track lol. It's just me (and I guess legend) like to only expand on the ones that start out good and fast.

Then again I make music that isn't as technical as edm, so it may differ on that level too. But usually I don't even open my DAW unless I know what type of track I wanna make. Typically I'll just be doing something throughout the day and something will inspire me to make a specific type of beat. Whether that be a youtube video, me looking at a bus, something my friend tells me, etc.
