Having lived through it, there was a really big push to get kids into soccer in the 70's. The high level of participation that you are seeing now is the fruit of that effort.rayman612 wrote:lol my attitude?

soccer hasnt been really popular in the US since the great depression and at that time football & basketball were only seriously played in schools
since WWII soccer has been no where near as popular as football or basketball or even hockey
& was never as popular as baseball

Include it, it will get a lot of use around here.
Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
No i'm getting pissed off at your short sarcastic unwarranted shit responses. and also at the way you tried to change what we where talking about. nobody said that it was more popular than all the other major sports. you mad that logic up -like how you made up that a lot of kids getting registered is the same as everybody following the sport itself. Thats just your logic.
There was however a time where a lot of players that would have ended up in italy and spain (mainly brazilian and argentine players) instead decided to go with pele among other notable players to ml, which actually had an effect on the european leagues.

Is MLS even popular now? They're going about it all the wrong way, throwing stupid money after celebrity players who are at the end of their career/just there for a quick payday won't make shit any more popular. Henry and Beckham, two of the biggest names of the 90's/00's have played in the MLS, and people still don't care. They still get lower attendances than High School Football games in Texasrayman612 wrote:yea thats when they started the whole youth soccer kids/soccer mom thing right

Seeing as your average american only cares about soccer during the world cup, it'd probably take a good run at the world cup (at least semi's) in a team made up of purely MLS based players, rather than just European based players who they don't see 11 months of the year.

its all they know how to do the soccer league when pele played had avg 70% of team $$$ in player contracts & compared to the nfl at the time was only 40%garethom wrote:Is MLS even popular now? throw money at big name guys b/c its all hype b/c most americans dont like soccer they just like the hype
same reason soccer got a surge w/ pele & then died right after he left
Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
Americans don't care for soccer, it is true. Remember playing soccer as a kid, we were the worst team. At the end of the game the coach would just let me run up field screaming hitting kids until I got thrown out. Really wish there was a god damned football league.
American football, that is.

Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
I think Americans do care for soccer, at least in my experience, just not professional soccer, for whatever reason. I had a lot of friends who played soccer in high school and soccer was everyone's favorite sport. Soccer is definitely really popular in terms of people playing it and high school soccer is pretty important, though not as big as football or basketball but probably bigger than baseball and hockey in my area at least.
Just no one watches it on tv. Most people i know would rather watch european football than MLS

Football games at my highschool filled the stadium
Soccer games filled 3 rows
The soccer team was much more successful, football team was terrible

Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
at my high school both soccer and football games were filled. but we didn't have a stadium, just bleachers.
our soccer team was really good, football was so-so. it's popularity probably had to do with the fact that my high school had a lot of hispanic people.
