Also, comparing Gravity to 2001 seems outrageous to me. Contrary to many I don't consider 2001 to be the holy grail of Sci-Fi, or maybe even Kubric's career. It is undoubtedly a classic and a great movie though. For one, it combined the science with existential/philosophical (maybe even religious) issues to great success, one of Gravity's biggest failure's in my opinion. In fact if Cuaron hadn't bothered with it a all, the movie would probably have been better off for it.

2001 isn't the holy grail of Sci-Fi, that's Blade Runner. And the best Kubrick movie is A Clockwork Orange, with 2001 following.joeki wrote:Also, comparing Gravity to 2001 seems outrageous to me. It's a good movie for theatres. There's a ton worse that came out this year for sure (Pacific Rim, Oblivion, After Earth (LOL), even Elysium was a bit disappointing). I enjoyed it in the cinema but in 3 months all I will remember is the graphics and that was a bit disappointing, is all I wanted to say (perhaps it came out wrong, usually is the case with me anyway).
I really want to see Filth also but it's straight to DVD here. Looking forward to the new Mad Max and Godzilla for the next year...I do hope they finally get that one right for a change. It looks darker and the creature looks awesome, but the bits of dialogue I've heard in the teaser don't bode to well....we'll see.

I can't decide if 47 Ronin looks so bad it'll be good or just straight bad. It seems to have fuck all to do with the legendary 47 Ronin..

Spring Breakers is easily the weirdest thing I ever saw.
It's like it's trying to educate teenagers about drugs by showing a lot of half naked chicks.
All wrapped into cheesy shots with a lot of off screen dialogue and Carbon Based Lifeforms(?) music.
Franco was doing pretty good as an exorbitant riff raff gangster until the very elusive plot decided
to go in another direction

I liked Spring breakers tbh, thought it was clever in its own way
just watched A Field In England after seeing it being given #1 here a couple pages ago, pretty good. I love the tone of the whole thing, a weird bunch of characters and enough mushrooms brought out something really good from what could have been a terrible movie about an alchemist trying to find treasure in a field.

loooool 2001 holy grail of sci fi?? that film is severely wank. 3 long drawn out boring hours of pretentious shit with zero substance. yeah some of the sets are stunning and its nicely filmed, but other than that its got absolutely zilch going for it. watched it sober and really really high and both times i thought it was absolute drivel. blade runner is defo superior but the story is still lacking tbh
Oblivion (that shite tom cruise film?) is another perfect example of complete style over substance. visually incredible at points, but overall it was utter crap.
i wish people would try harder with the stories instead of thinking "manz ....u know what would look really cool in 3D???,,,,"
someone recommend me something worth watching. the only films ive properly enjoyed recently were synecdoche NY & un prophete )-:

2001 is a holy grail of sorts purely for the legacy it left behind for all sci-fi movies that came after. and tbh, I genuinely love it; I think only very very few movies have reached its standard when it comes to doing something about space that isnt just a bunch of amazing visuals

Here is a snippet from a write up Roger Ebert did.
"What he (Kubrick) had actually done was make a philosophical statement about man's place in the universe, using images as those before him had used words, music or prayer. And he had made it in a way that invited us to contemplate it -- not to experience it vicariously as entertainment, as we might in a good conventional science-fiction film, but to stand outside it as a philosopher might, and think about it."
I invite you to read the whole article. http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great ... yssey-1968
The most interesting topic the movie covered for me personally was humanity. How in the presented world the computer seemed more human than the humans that created and operated it. HAL lied to the crew, it showed fear (and curiosity I guess) of death, its life "flashed" before its eyes as it was dying. While the humans seemed really emotionless and disconnected.

Try Rust & Bone from the director of Un prophete. & Isn't the new Spike Jonze out in the US & UK ? I'd definitely go see that even if Kaufman didn't write it.bennyfroobs wrote:loooool 2001 holy grail of sci fi?? that film is severely wank.
