Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
You know, I think you may be faulting the price point, rather than krk's. Now they may have competition down there, but just a few years ago they probably were the most competent monitor in that price range.
In regards to your tinnitus - prolly spending time in clubs + being high strung has hurt you more than the krk's, in this doctors opinion.
Cheers to you, and glad you found something that you like. Did you mention what you're using now?

Its probably true about that Rokits used to be the name of the game as far as budget monitors go. KRKs higher end monitors sound pretty damn good so its not like that can't make a good product.

ah so, thank you.
Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
Rokits are well known for causing ear fatigue. When I started producing I used to work for looooong sessions with them and they inevitably helped to develop my tinnitus. I know it's not entirely KRK's fault, but I do really have to blame the sound on the highs.. they are marketed as having a "flat response".. but they are really not.nowaysj wrote:You know, I think you may be faulting the price point, rather than krk's. When I bought them I also had a very good offer on a pair of Alesis M1.. But back then when I started I didn't have any good advice on monitors, and since a bunch of studios were using them I thought they were "fine" - I was plain wrong. That's pretty much the reason I keep writing about them.. just offering -sincere- advice.
I have now a pair of equator D5; I have been able to test a bunch of high end consumer monitors, from Genelec, to Dynaudio, Adam, Event (Opals), Yamaha, Focal, etc and please let me tell you that Equator's are hard to beat. I would compare them to Adam's A7 (probably not A7x) and IMO much better than genelec's. These babies offer so much detail.. it's unbelievable.
I have moved from dubstep to other genres, like ambient, IDM, drone, noise and a bit of downtempo (a commercial project I can't really talk about). I remember hating so much my Rokits that out of desperation I bought a pair of Shure's 840 headphones to finish my last album as Mekha (Which you can check out here: http://cutmusic.org/ if you care about all this crap) I finished the album on the headphones because I couldn't just get the delicate and very fine/microscopic details that I wanted with the Rokits. When I finished the album I sold all my gear and almost quit production.
Then I ordered my D5 with high hopes; I have to say that I was a bit skeptical as first.. but oh boy they blowed me away. I'm working on music again on a daily basis with absolutely NO ear fatigue nor mixing problems than my previous pair had.
Btw. I don't attend parties at all.. I just make music; I don't give a crap about playing/clubbing.
Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
If you think the krk's hurt, spend a decade with yamaha ns-10's. Now those I swear damaged my ears. I listen on krk's ALL day, like 14 hour days, and it feels good to shut it down, but it doesn't feel like switching the ns-10's ers. That was literally like removing a pick from your ear.
I do believe the krk's are somewhat hyped, but again, less so than the others (of a few years ago) in the price range. One of the biggest problems I have is the absence of low end, so as kicks, for example, pitch down, they sound helluv tight on the krk's, as you get the high attack and the initial slide. But in reality there is a much longer tail that continues to slide, so not only is there frequency conflict that you are not hearing, it changes the rhythmic impact of the kick. But I'm sure that is going to happen with all small woofered speakers.
I've never used a fine monitor, so I really can't say, but I am having a hard time getting my mixes to translate, and am coming to the pained realization that my headphones, dt 770's are probably giving a more accurate representation of my mixes.

My thoughts too, would be nice to move my DJ setup out of my studio and make room for more acoustic treatmentfragments wrote:If I needed a b-pair of speakers or DJ monitors Id pick these up as well. Theyd also be decent as listening speakers in a small space IMO. One bedroom apartment etc.

I would totally buy this but my room is 3x2,8 metres, absolutely no idea how many "feet" or whatever that is, and untreated. I don't intend to keep it untreated of course, but it's still very small.
I wasn't gonna get 8" monitors, but I really want these now.
Is it really such a bad idea to get these for me?

$370 is not a bad price. Depending on where you are in your production life, I say go for it. Never mind standing waves and all that shiz. Having actual representation down 50hz and below will be nice.

Arent standing waves etc a really big deal though? Like mix ruining deal? Not that I can mix but I'll get better.nowaysj wrote:$370 is not a bad price. Standing waves are going to happen unless you seriously treat your room, with like professional knowledge and professional materials, and something close to a professional budget. And even then there may still be issues.

Are the Equators really THAT good?
I might get them as a birthday present to myself? Theres Adam A5X's for 445 at the moment, which I was going to get...

When I switched from krk rokit 6 g2s to Equator D5s it was a pretty significant and immediate difference. When I got the KRKs it felt like a marginal upgrade from mixing on hifi speakers. Moving to the D5s was a revelation, comparatively.legend4ry wrote:Are the Equators really THAT good?

Just me. My ears. My room etc...

I'd make the switch myself now, but if I'm buying new monitors they're going to go down to 40hz for criminy sakes. So D8's? Haha, again, would have to return to a life of evil.
Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
Yes. I've been dwelling on D8s or a sub. I'm actually thinking sub and something like a big knob so I can just flip on the sub to check the low end now and again.nowaysj wrote:I'd make the switch myself now, but if I'm buying new monitors they're going to go down to 40hz for criminy sakes. Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
Dude, you need to hear the low end all the time, unless you're just like doing dialog and can zap any rumble off an analyzer. Again, it's not just hearing the spectral content at the low end, it is hearing the rhythmic feel of the low end.
Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
That makes sense. Either way a sub isnt a terrible idea then.nowaysj wrote:Dude, you need to hear the low end all the time, unless you're just like doing dialog and can zap any rumble off an analyzer. BTW, anyone jump on this Rokit deal?

Wait, either which way?
Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
Yea, the either way part doesnt make any sense. I dunno. Ignore the last message.nowaysj wrote:Wait, either which way?
What I meant was in light of your comments about needing to hear the rhythm of the sub frequencies etc, a sub wouldnt be a bad idea.

Re: ***KRK RP8G2 reduced from $499 to $169 on Amazon***
yeah, its not! I really really regret it... S'why my next monitors, if I ever get new monitors will be 8's.
