Small sound system adequate for a little shindig...?

Post by TomatoAndBasil » Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:33 pm

So basically I'm organising the music for a do of sorts. I'm not so clued up on what sort of speakers I'm gonna need to fill a small old church / turned exhibition space.

The crowd isn't really gonna be as bass orientated as us lot, so I haven't got some 'Valve' sized thing in mind. So rather than eyeball rattling, I'm looking for something that'll pack some punch, but not obliterate everyone after a short time.

And the music is gonna be mainly nostalgia-party-anthems ('80s synthpop, '90s Eurodance, general old tunes), so that's not gonna be too low-end dependant.

I've been offered 2x 15" 600W (RMS) speakers and 2x 18" 1200W (RMS) subs.

Do any of you guys have experience with this sorta thing? Will that fill the space, or is it too much?

Will pay big ups.for especially helpful advice. :w:

Do you have a rough square footage?

I'll actual have some lectures on public address this month :)
But for now I'd say stick to 3 watts per audience member. 2x 600 watts rms will probably
be more than sufficient, but it's never bad to have some headroom.

Go for it if you feel like it's a good price.

(the watts per audience thing doesn't always apply, it's simplifying things)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Floor plan the venue gave me says 12.5m by 23m although there is a balcony running around the place which excluding that makes the central width about 7.5m. It's also 10.5m high at the centre.

Yeah it's not that big, so I'd say you can make do with that setup.

Would be preferable to lift the tops up to ear height or above obviously. But you probably
get appropriate stands etc.. with it.
