Friends smoke to much weed and are now very boring.

I smoked weed for 4 years and quit because it stopped agreeing with me. I haven't smoked in 3 years and have noticed a sharp decline in interest to hang out with my small circle. I made all these friends in highschool and (unknowingly at the time) the biggest thing we had in common was our taste in music, teenage angst, and smoking weed. Now at almost 24, I have very little in common at this point. Im a huge tech geek and like to talk about nerdy stuff. But when I kick it with my friends, all they like to do is sit in a cricle, play music, smoke weed, and talk about random stuff that I cant really build off of because im sober and dont have the 'high' mentaltiy that allows me to communicate with them on a common ground.


I dont have any issues with weed, but its incredibly frustrating when everyone needs to be high ALL the time (by everyone I mean my friends). Everyone seems to have difficulties enjoying something sober.

I understand one thing I can do is make new friends but im trying to keep the old ones because we have a history.

Im sure im not the only one who has come across this dilemma?

Smoking weed or not, this is a common occurrence in life. Just find new friends, but its not like you have to ditch these ones completely.

Also though the weed could be not helping. I bet no-one else backs me up here because they all smoke but while not true for everyone weed can make some people really boring and lazy. Largely because they smoke too much of it

yea i know a few people like this. smoke loads, never wanna go out, never wanna do anything, just wanna derp around and have stoner crakc. they need to grow up tbh. most of my friends grew out of it long ago and we're all out doing shit together.

though a few of my mates still smoke nearly every day and love being active and doing shit. its down to the individual really, but ye i find that, generally speaking, stoners are lazy and boring

I smoke but only by myself really, and that's very weak joints as it is. my brother (best mate since i was born) started smoking a lot later than me and it's really sad that over the last year i have hardly seen him as all he wants to do is get stoned in his flat and play on a football manager game.

it's wound me up so much but whatever I try and suggest he won't have non of it. I never go out for a pint with him, I never do anything other than sitting in his flat getting stoned whilst he sits there playing his game.

I've completely cut off contact with him as it wa always me getting in touch with him.. so until he wants to change I'm not gonna bother.

It's really sad as we grew up together and he is family to me but whatever.. I'm not gonna succumb to someone because they don't want to do anything other than staying in.

I also had this problem, but with alcohol. When i was younger i use to get drunk very often with my friends, my best friends for that matter. Getting drunk and music was what we had in common. However, i when to college put my head down and started working, and cutting back the alcohol. Obvs this puts limits on the friendship. Then i when to uni, in a different city so it got very hard to see each other, and now that i've stopped drinking completely its hard to find things in common.

However, on the plus side, when I sent out my happy new year text to friends, a few, the ones i dicuss above, recognised that alcohol should not be the core of any friendship cuz thats some fake shit. We're all still very good friends, but as you grown your values change. For example, you now like tech, they will like weed. It's just a matter until they grew up like you?

J2X, you have history with your friends, but no future. They are going in a different direction in life. Let them go their way, you go your way. You can still get together from time to time, maybe certain individuals will start to tire of their limited existence and move on a bit, you can help them return to the world. But just let them be, and try to find people that share your interests. And do it fast. As people get older, they get more and more closed off, ultimately to have no room for any new friends in their lives. If you are playing musical chairs, and are left standing, you may never have a good group of friends again.

Do they have jobs? it's hard to be a full time stoner when you can't get stoned for 8 hours a day although if they are anything like me you'll just be fucking knackered by your job instead (I literally don't get to sit down except for half an hour at lunch and my job is pretty intense )

Do they have any interests that could convince them to get out more? I feel a lot of it is psychological but also a lot of it is genuinely physical. Smoking all day every day, especially joints, gives your blood really rather high levels of carbon monoxide and this, coupled with the propensity to lounge around and do nothing, genuinely makes a person seriously unfit to the point where simple things like going to the shops takes a lot of energy. You know your friends fit in this bracket when one of them runs out of baccy or something and they all have a stand off about who should pop out for 2 minutes to do it.

A lot of good replies and advice here. To respond to a few of them:

Most of them do have jobs, going to school, etc. but for the most part have low ambition (not necessarily due to weed but just in general).

As far as finding new friends goes, it does feel like it's more difficult than what it was like in high school, not because of the lack of common ground but because most people where I live are busy with (/adjusting to) adulthood (rent, work, school, bills, etc.) and have less time for leisurely activities. Not saying everyone's a stickler, people still have fun, it's just not the same experience and environment compared to kicking it with close friends. It's still doable, it's just a pain in the ass trying to build that same level of trust with a completely different circle. You guys are right though, has to be done one way or another.

it could be that tbh, and weed makes depression shitheaps worse for a lot of people in general, cos it makes them all anxious and never want to do anything and hate being in public places etc.

ive had friends who have been like that for a long time now with absolutely no signs of changing, despite the fact that almost everyone has said "ur turning into a speng, stop it". its the people with a problem who tend to end up self absorbed and ignorant. the folks who can function in daily life while smoking on the regs are always to be alright in my experience, as long as they dont go sick and turn into a potato.
all u can do for the speng potatos i honestly and brutally tell them theyre being wastemen, beating around the bush and being all airey fairey doesnt help. theres only so much u can do though, people have to want to change themselves (n all that bs). ive just completely given up on some people. . u may have known them for years and absolutely love the crap out of them but youve just got to let it go

What I have noticed with pot (and to include alcohol) is when kids start at a young age they lose inhibition to do anything but smoke pot because of the fact that it is "illegal". Since it is fun all they want to do is smoke more pot and typically it attracts the more rebellious crowd. They do this over the years and get stuck in that train of thought.

I enjoy smoking weed, but I tend to just smoke it with friends for fun. Usually just smoke once a week or couple times a week and then I won't for a couple months until I feel like it again. Good way to enjoy it as for me, it doesn't lose the fun of it like alcohol has over the years.
