The private school vs comprehensive debate

As it says on the tin. Where would you rather send your child?

You get a "better" standard of education in private schools but more well rounded experience in comps.

I'd rather my kids had a wide range of friends and was happier in him/herself without getting worked like a dog for grades. Your own thoughts?

Private schools don't necessarily work the kids hard. Go ask Gwa for his take on Leeds Grammar. They seem to inculcate a conservative-backing, economic liberal mindset though.

In Japan though, it's rich people paying for thick kids to retain a place in the social hierarchy. At high school level onwards, state institutions are selective.

I went to public high school & college, but from what I've seen, private school people don't work harder than public school people. All the private schools around me were just funnels that prepped kids to go to Georgetown, Stanford, Notre Dame, Villanova, Ivy League, etc. They have connections with the admissions people at private, usually religious, colleges. They do less work, but get into better colleges.

Also, I don't think private schools get less well-rounded educations. They are more likely to have wonky and/or famous guest speakers and obscure classes and field trips and shit like that.

But public schools are definitely more "you're on your own" and you have to take more responsibility. Private school people are more likely to die from alcohol poisoning their first week at college though, imo.

well, i think you know what i mean. the atmosphere is more lax. teachers at private schools are more likely to say, "okay, i'll bump you up from a C+ to a B-". they also aren't as obsessed with test scores and actually care more about a well-rounded education imo because they don't have to worry about public funding.

the level of education is of course higher (in general), but that doesn't = working harder. public school people have to work harder in order to get a good education. i'm not saying they do less work in an absolute sense, but they don't need to work as hard in order to get into Notre Dame compared to someone in a public school.

Really depends on where I was living... if I was back in the sticks, I'd be happy enough to send them to a decent comprehensive. I would probably only raise kids in a city if I knew I could afford to send them to a private school or if I could find a comp with a really good reputation. I wish the situation was different from this... it pains my socialist heart to say it, but it's not. Private educations, especially in large cities, are reliably better.

Having dated a girl that went to a relatively posh all-girls school in Bristol for the best part of a decade, I can definitely vouch for the fact that private education gives more than just good grades, but only if the student is receptive... her and her sister were complete opposites; the sister came out pretty much unskilled and is now the classic nightmare entitled wife with nothing to say and a husband struggling to keep her in handbags, my ex took everything the school had to offer and came out as an incredibly confident woman who had a pie-in-the-sky dream of a career in the music industry when she was 15 and is now doing it. My best friend (LASERGirl) went to a rival private school to that one and is currently working on her dream Physics PhD.

On "working hard" - the amount of work all the people I knew from private schools did utterly eclipsed the work I was set at my school (which was a fairly good comprehensive). Not just academically... music lessons, extra curricular sport, travelling the world (trips to play music in various places, ski trips, hockey tours), work placements, going in on weekends for extra tutoring and help with coursework.. to a workshy oik like me it seemed never ending. Whoever it was saying that private schoolkids aren't worked as hard is viewing the world through incredibly biased spectacles!

Of course, there are plenty of examples of the success from comprehensives - one of my oldest friends is a doctor for Médecins Sans Frontières - but if I compare their old friendship groups to mine it's pretty obvious which ones are doing better on average. It's sad and incredibly disappointing, but unfortunately, it's also true.

I turned down going to a King Edwards school because all my mates were going to one of the local comprehensives, so I went there and I've barely stabbed anyone for weeks.
