in fact it's cool to kinda recognize the thread between people's most rated tunes, like looking at garry's list you get a vibe for what kinda sounds he likes
Analyse me bro, would be interested to see how accurate you got it!

Erm I suppose its a bit more intuitive than just str8 up analysing it.

I guess you're into strings, a sort of of muted ethereal downcast vibe, kinda techy, not too much growly, crunchy shit with really prominent vocal cuts like Toasty does with his "oooh yeeaah"s and stuff. Circling for instance is an example of the opposite of that.

For instance I love shit like Honour Kill, MUGEN, Take It Personal and LHF - Questions with a really raw, direct sound like 93-94 jungle or hip hop tunes like Give Up The Goods by Mobb Deep. There's not many tunes with that vibe on your list. Like, you pick Forgive over Alica when it comes to Mala tunes for instance. Those tunes are both on a pretty emotional tip but approach it differently. Forgive is more like it gradually floats over you with those rising pianos and hard, muted, persistent beat, slowly building up a vibe. On the other hand Alicia kind of cuts right into it with those guitar plucks, the soulful vocal and rougher sounding drums.

Also a lot of the tunes you pick have a really bittersweet vibe like Roll With The Punches and Aidy's Gir and Forgive. It's a colder approach to emotion than guys like Toasty and LHF do.

I suppose I'm describing what you *don't* have more than vice versa but maybe you'll recognize what I mean.

And nobody mentioned Orpheas from Pariah? And big up for the guy that mentioned spliff dub, one of my favourite Zomby tunes.

And i think i should also make a list, but the problem is that not all of my favourite tunes are on my HDD or vinyl collection and i don't want to forget some. And yes, there will be at least one Skream tune in it.

dude we really aren't on the same page. i wasn't making as strong of a statement as it must have seemed. I guess sometimes the way i say things can be a bit blunt/definitive but really that isn't what I meant. i should have never used the word persona. by 'persona', i meant his position in the scene and running the two biggest record labels and not quitting when it isn't cool anymore and not saying things like "dubstep is dead" but instead saying really respectful things like how he hates promoting his own music but doesn't mind with other people.

I wasn't saying ppl like him or put him in their top 5 solely for these reasons. i was saying that i think he's an incredible musician to begin with, and all those other factors (which i inaccurately lumped them all into one word) push him to a higher spot. i'm not saying this is "the only reason people like him no if's and's or but's." maybe this only applies to some people and not others. i dunno. i'm just saying as a whole I think his name has been elevated for these reasons.

@garethom i wasn't calling you or anyone else a hipster, i have complete respect for your taste in music and everyone else's. I thought I had made that clear in my earlier posts. My bad if that's how it came across.

I honestly thought we were having a friendly conversation I didn't sense any neg vibes.

^ na it was a friendly discussion :w:

I get your point about his status within the scene and I can understand over hyping new tunes just cause its Mala, but I don't think its the case with the classics. If it is the case then you've pretty much got an argument for saying all older tunes are overrated. Skreams old stuff is overrated because now hes making disco and he was at one time boy wonder, same goes for Loefah as hes quit making it, people overrate his dubs cause they're almost certain never to come out ect ect.

But yeah you came across a bit too strong with:

yeah i like to talk overly simplistic and bluntly for some reason...

but i still stand by what i was saying earlier. i think loefah is a totally different case and is not really relevant. I don't get how the underlined part makes any sense. seems like your lumping in skream with mala here when i'm saying that they're kind of opposites... also i don't see any distinction between old vs new

Yeah, think I suggested "Roll With The Punches" cos pretty much everybody had that in their top 5's/10's etc.

Ah yeah, we did it for albums as well, I said Distance - My Demons was the album I'd show if I had to show somebody what dubstep was (albums only).

Good choice. Mistral and Ska :Q:

I'd go for Kromestar - My Sound.
