Iran

Is Iran a no-go place for Westerners? Like if I rocked up for a bit of sightseeing outside the cities would I get my head chopped off on a YouTube video?

The g-men seem to think you shouldn't go: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/iran
The FCO advise against all but essential travel to the rest of Iran.

British travellers to Iran face greater risks than nationals of many other countries due to high levels of suspicion about the UK and the UK government’s limited ability to assist in any difficulty.

There’s a risk that British nationals could be arbitrarily detained in Iran despite their complete innocence. British nationals were arbitrarily detained in 2010 and 2011, and there is a risk of this occurring again. A group of eight Slovak paragliders were arrested in May 2013 and three US hikers were arrested near the Iraqi border in 2009.

Interesting. I'd be heading top right bit near Azerbaijan. Is Azerbaijan any better? :?

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to Nagorno-Karabakh and the military occupied area surrounding it. There have been ceasefire violations along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and Line of Contact which resulted in a number of deaths and casualties. See Local travel

Anyone who has visited Nagorno-Karabakh without the permission of the Azerbaijani authorities will be refused entry to Azerbaijan.

All British nationals travelling to Azerbaijan must obtain a visa in advance. See Visas.

There is a general threat from terrorism. See Terrorism.

Around 7,000 British nationals visit Azerbaijan every year, mainly on business. Most visits are trouble free.

Is it for a holiday? surely there are other places you could go that don't risk being randomly arrested and beheaded?

The borderlands by Iran are probably the only bit of Azerbaijan you definitely DON'T want to go - it's in the process of becoming (or not) a republic and is currently under fairly heavy military control.

Why are you travelling? You live in Holiday.

Looking for things to climb. Sabalan seemed a possibility, but couldn't find any reviews or discussion about climbing it online. Now I know why.

Climb that big hill behind Benelmadena, there's a chap up the top who'll let you look through his telescopes if you go on an evening of the right day and you can get the cable car back down to Tivoli World and go on the go karts. I bet they don't have safely underpowered go karts in Iran.

Have you been up to Sierra Nevada incidentally? Slightly rubbish for skiing given that it's usually packed, but BEAUTIFUL.
