MEMORY BOX
A History of Bass 1980 - 2014

PINCH // PLASTICIAN // MARK ARCHER (ALTERN8) // ROBIN BALL

FRIDAY 21 FEBRUARY @ RHYTHM FACTORY, LONDON
23:00 – 06:00
TICKETS FROM http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?532580

Tape up the windows, box up the breakables, give your Gran some earplugs, there’s going to be a bass explosion on Friday 21st February at Rhythm Factory as Memory Box returns for a special night exploring ‘A History of Bass’ from 1980 to 2014. From second generation dub to today's modern bass sound via House, breakbeat, Rave, Drum & Bass, UK Garage, Grime & Dubstep, its all covered.

The night and line up runs in a sequential, historical order with Memory Box host Robin Ball kicking things off with a roots of bass set from 1980 – 1990 showcasing his passion for origi-nal electronic Bass music. He’ll play a progression from second generation UK dub music by the likes of Mad professor, Jah Shaka and Adrian Sherwood right through to the bass heavy sound of late 80’s house, breakbeat and rave from the likes of Renegade Soundwave, S.U.A.D. and The Prodigy. Robin is followed by rave hero Mark Archer of Altern8 fame taking up the baton from 1990 – 1998 playing a mix of early hardcore, rave and jungle. Original dubstep pioneer Plastician picks things up from 1998 – 2005 digging through the roots of Garage, early grime and the music from Croydon that eventually got coined the name of Dubstep. Bristol’s bass kingpin Pinch brings things up to date representing the emersion and then consequent mutation of the UK dubstep sound. Robin then closes the night with a bass classics set.

Memory Box is just one year young, and in its inaugural year, has captured and celebrated defining moments in the last few decades of electronic music. Delving deep into its rich his-tory, Memory Box trawls the archives to produce a broad selection of sonic memoirs to en-lighten, inspire and educate a new generation.

DJ BIOGS

Pinch
“If your chest aint rattlin’ – it ain’t happenin” Pinch, 2006

Pinch is known for many things bass related – whether it’s his productions/remixes, DJ sets, labels or events, he has excelled at all levels. His Subloaded night, operating since 2004, brought dubstep to Bristol – the scene’s first destination outside of London’s conceptual FWD>> at Plastic People. By 2008, Subloaded was pulling in over 1000 heads for each event and the Bristol dubstep scene was thriving, Pinch at the helm of it all. His Tectonic imprint, established in 2005, has brought many great names to the forefront of underground dance music – and in the process, the label has garnered an international reputation for consistent quality. Carving a unique niche in forward-thinking electronic music, Tectonic showcased early releases from the likes of Loefah, Skream, 2562, Digital Mystikz, Distance, Flying Lotus, Joker, Addison Groove, and Peverelist.

Plastician
Chris Reed, also known as Plastician (formerly Plasticman), is a Dubstep and Grime DJ from Thornton Heath in the London Borough of Croydon. Plastician is unique in that he is respected as one of the true pioneers of both the Dubstep and Grime genres. In 2006 he spent 18 months on BBC Radio 1, making him the world’s first DJ to have a specialist dubstep and grime radio show on national radio.

Mark Archer
Mark Archer was a founder member of Bizarre inc before starting up a new project under the name Nexus 21 which went on to release tracks on legendary labels like Network and R&S as well remixes from Carl Craig, Mark Kinchen and Kevin Saunderson on KMS. Mark was also a founder member of Altern 8 who crashed into the UK charts in 1991 with ‘Infiltrate 202’ and ‘Activ-8 (come with me)’, two chaotic slices of hardcore, the latter reaching number 3. They were aided in their chart aspirations by the circulation of fictitious press stories concerning their alleged activities, which included promoting the decongestant Vicks Vapor Rub, which, it was claimed, heightened the effects of Ecstasy; and standing as local candidates for the 1993 General Election. Their live events were also designed as eye-catching performances, where the band donned RAF chemical warfare suits and dust masks. Additional vinyl outings included the ‘Overload ep’ (1990), ‘Frequency’ (10,000 copies of which were on sale for a single day only and written solely by Archer), and another top ten hit, ’Evapor 8’, followed by ’Hypnotic St8’, the LP ‘Full on Mask Hysteria’ (number 10 in the LP charts).

Robin Ball
Robin Ball is a dance music maverick. He’s been DJ’ing and putting on parties since the age of 14 in his own un-conformist style. He’s run independent record labels and a music distribution company, tutored un-ruly kids in the art of DJ’ing and run a 3 piece live dance music group.

Over the years Robin has delivered his unique sound alongside a whole host of dance music’s stars. From luminaries Andrew Weatherall and Gilles Peterson to old-skool icons like Carl Cox, Sasha & Leftfield, through Detroit techno legends Kevin Saunderson and Stacey Pullen to UK drum & bass heroes Sub Focus and Dillinja and underground innovators Luke Slater and Underground Resistance. From the UK through Europe all the way to Australia Robin has ripped dance floors apart with his unique forward-thinking style and mixing prowess.

Robin can also be found in the studio and has collaborated with several producers and engineers on music productions for his own labels; Magus, Groovepressure and Groove Pleasure as well as Rob Pearson’s Evasive Records but at last he’s spending time in the studio working on his first pure solo productions for release in 2014. Watch this space.
