What is the purpose of our being here, either as a species or an individual? Is there a meaning to life, and if so what is it?

So what is yours?m8son wrote:If you are an atheist there isn't one overall meaning that is applicable to everyone, we have to make our own.

So your life at the moment has no meaning?m8son wrote:I haven't found/created one yet.

Does that mean people who don't/can't have children have no meaning of life?Pedro Sánchez wrote:To survive longer enough to see your genes passed on, beyond that, make the meaning what you will.
That isn't worded particularly well, but in answer the question in OP;m8son wrote:What meaning do you give your life wub?
I'd say the meaning of my life is to explore it.wub wrote:What is the purpose of our being here, either as a species or an individual? Is there a meaning to life, and if so what is it?

In order for evolution to progress the species has to go through various incarnations of suffering in order to eliminate the weak genes. So i guess suffering is the meaning of life for a Darwinist.m8son wrote:the meaning of life is to suffer.

That is down to the species as a whole, not the suffering of an individual.m8son wrote:Pedro Sánchez wrote:To survive longer enough to see your genes passed onIn order for evolution to progress the species has to go through various incarnations of suffering in order to eliminate the weak genes. As per OP;m8son wrote:Your question is aimed at the species as a whole is it not?
So both. What is the purpose of our being here, either as a species or an individual?

This would suggest a chaos theory approach, with things being unstructured?magma wrote:Life happens; best thing is just to try and enjoy it wherever possible.
I'm not even going to get into what's wrong with this sentence.magma wrote:It's like trying to find the score on a pair of shoes or the temperature of a website.
Not at all. Life has masses of structure; I'm currently sat working a contractual obligation in order to pay rent to a landlord so I can live in a building that took hundreds of people to design/build with hundreds of other humans... you can't get away from structure. None of that requires life to "mean" anything though.wub wrote:This would suggest a chaos theory approach, with things being unstructured?magma wrote:Life happens; best thing is just to try and enjoy it wherever possible.

Why not? Do you really think it's possible to ascribe life a meaning? What meaning do you ascribe?wub wrote:I'm not even going to get into what's wrong with this sentence.magma wrote:It's like trying to find the score on a pair of shoes or the temperature of a website.
