Trap sounds?

Post by Today » Thu Feb 20, 2014 9:36 pm

sup production forum, been awhile. Just did a quick search and haven't found any threads about making trap tunes/trap sounds.

i know it seems basic (808s, pitch shifted samples, have fun with it, etc.) and then there's the rapid pitch envelope ravey moombahton-esque synth leads,

i guess none of the techniques are ground breaking, but to be honest i enjoy a fair bit of these beats. Love the space in it, its less maximal than bro-step.

anyway i'd love to have a chat about how to make some of the popular trap leads, how to mix those 808 kicks or other methods of sub-bass.

I recently sampled one of my china cymbals stacked with a crash, got a nice trashy sample and did a couple loops, made some .rx2's out of them. Would be happy to share these but maybe some of you could tip me off on some other sounds good for trap

Lex Luger drumkit is a good place to start when looking for trap sounds.

Nice to see you back around here man. I swear most trap songs these days have like filtered squares layered over the basses for super pronounced low end like this:

Either that or its massively compressed. I do think its a shorter 808 layered with a square bass and a sub though for the tail section of the kick bass combo if that makes sense

A few vengeance ones now if I remember.

From what most of it sounds like, the mids / highs end up pretty distorted, this allows you to get maximum oomf from your 808's while keeping the clarity up top. Also reverb, reverb, reverb your leads!

One day I will finish one of these trap songs I start every now and then

We've been totally into shit like TNGHT, Wave Racer, Cosmo's Midnight, AWE, Djemba Djemba and the Team Supreme crew in general. Those kids are killing it. We haven't made any trap yet but we're totally digging the sound. It's getting such a good response at our shows.

Just realized I said a bunch without really saying anything.

You can get some sick sick sick leads with Ableton's Sampler, throwing in pretty much any sample and making it loop so it's pitched to your liking, and adding a pitch envelope -12dB (so it's starting -12 under and going UP really quickly) with like 60-80ms decay and distorting it with a couple serial (not parallel) instances of Overdrive with different settings. Then ValhallaRoom it (or your reverb of choice).

There are some great snares/claps in Urban Arsenal by Native Instruments, but you probably won't be using their kicks anytime soon.

The white boy trap sound kicks seem to have a lot of punch in the like 150-200hz region in addition to a moderate amount of sub. Similar to dubstep, the sub bass instrument (not the kick) is loud as fucking shit in the mix and sidechained quickly to the kick.

Similar tricks you should be used to from dubstep I think. Will report more as we experiment more with the sound.

Also, dont mean to threadjack but does trap tend to be heavily compressed/limited like other edm (hate this term) genres?

The 808's with the harmonics are lowpassed square waves. Go google for the Gucci Mane drum kit. If you can't find it message me and I'll give it to you. It has all of the generic trap sounds including 808 kicks, single kicks, snares, claps, clares, hats, shakes, 808 crashes, etc. And I don't really make EDM trap but to me the leads sound like just regular short sounds with a lot of reverb.
