Well, it will not be a suprise if i said that this is a mediocre action movie, but i still enjoyed it. Sometimes there was too much happening on the screen what leaded that i couldn't always follow the battles. But it was still better than i imagined.

Yeah, i also should start reading that book. That part of The Cold War interest me the most tbh and proves that the Cold War was more than the Cuban crisis alone. The both World Wars were the biggest wars in history, but the consequences of the Cold War are the ones that everyone still feels in the world. From the whole fucked up situation in the Middle East to the terroristic attacks in the Western World and the increased armed violence in the parts of the former Soviet Union. It's not that you can blame everything on the Cold War, but there it really 'started' to escalate.

There was a period in the before the end of the Cold War where the Mujahideen were shown in a very positive light for obvious reasons...Living Daylights, Spys Like Us etc.

I didn't realise so much of whats happened in recent times can be attributed so heavily to stuff that happened in the Cold War. Not that I'm surprised.. but the specifics are interesting, definitely going to read the book I assume it explains it in greater detail.

They sort of implied that's what happened towards the end of the film, the quote at the end was good - "These things really happened. We changed the world, then we blew the end game." - Charlie Wilson.

Yeah haha, Hoffman did anger scenes well.. the one in Punch Love Drunk is great as well.

Even before watching this movie, you know that the movie already achieved something. Namely dividing the critics into two camps; the camp that called this a pretentious piece of shit and the camp that saw it as an philosophical masterpiece. And i don't want to go that far by calling it a masterpiece, but it's far from a piece of shit. You can partly blame that on the marketing for making the impression that it was another action movie out of the hand of Ridley Scott. 'Cause the last things the movie pretends it is, is an action movie. The Counselor is more a movie that's very slow, but still effective with it's dialogues and images. Dialogues that are having an metaphorical character and with an nihilistic / cynical undertone, with moments i could really feel the presence of Nietzsche. Especially with the character played by Cameron Diaz. But not only the dialogues did that, but also the, with moments very violent, images. Although it took place in the south of North-America (you could really feel the heat of the place), the coldness and darkness were never far away. Beneath all those shiny cars, watches, houses and good-looking girls, there was still a constant presence of something evil, something dark. The white blankets and genuine intimacy that the movie started with were exchanged for empty feelings stimulated by greed and with no moral at all. Those beheadings, which by the way were shown without any shame, and the famous sex scene with the car are saying just enough.
