Fm8 Mod Wheel in Ableton

Post by Alan Adobe » Sat Feb 01, 2014 12:32 am

I can't figure out how record using the mod wheel of FM8 in Ableton! I can hit the mod wheel manually in FM8 but even if when I record manually moving the mod wheel the automations aren't recorded! Has anyone else had that problem, if so , how'd you fix it?

In Ableton, click the configure button on the top right corner of the fm8 plugin box, then click on the mod wheel in fm8 and it should pop up next to the fm8 box in ableton. Now enter midi map mode in ableton and map that to something, then you should be able to record in your automation. I think that should work, if not let me know

EDIT: Actually I was curious, so I opened it up just to make sure. You'd have to configure to parameter you wanted to modulate, not the mod wheel itself.

I did try that and it didn't work.. but what do you mean configure the parameter itself? I want to automate the parameter that the mod wheel is affecting..

what parameter is the mod wheel affecting? do exactly what I told you to do before but after you hit configure click on whatever the mod wheel is modding, not the wheel itself.

There's a video showing you how to do this

Ok So I have some modulated parameters and I opened midi mapping, I don't have a midi keyboard but
how do I map to CC1 and CC2 (the Fm8 Mod Wheel) To those parameters?

You'd have to click the blue highlighted parameter in Ableton and then twiddle the knob or hit the button that sends that message on whatever controller you're using. Or do you not have a controller at all?

Yeah I don't have a midi controller, but I can just use the Mod Wheel in FM8? What kind of midi controller would I need

No, you don't realliy NEED a controller, it's just a bit more handy. I'm pretty sure you can just record automation with your mouse. Since you have the parameter mapped into ableton now, hit the global record button but make sure none of the tracks are armed. Then just tweak the parameter while it's playing.

EDIT: You also don't need to be in midi map mode, because you don't have a midi controller
