Yes, I feel you on that - the gif sticky. Am having trouble with massive now, can't get the cutoff right, after I've automated three other parameters. Could work on it as I'm typing this message.

I already finished if you get my drift.

Lotsa things I don't like about massive. Not really fond of the colors, the inflexibility of the envelope segmenter thing, lack of spread on the oscs, being stuck with the same damn wavetables. From a synthesis point of view I think Zebra is infinitely more powerful. In terms of UI though there's some things that Zebra could improve on. But Massive's drag and drop thing is great and essential really. If you're still using mod matrices in 2014 you need to re-evaluate some shit son.

Not gonna be sacrificing function for form. It should be functional form. For instance all my timing knobs will have LEDs in them that light up when that envelope stage is active. You should be able to squint and mute your sound and still get an idea of what's going on by the light patterns alone. I'll probably do a bit of perspective but not super forced perspective, that's just ridiculous. Nobody adjusts a compressor while looking through a fisheye lens (except fish).

I have to say, Massive has really grown on me recently. Demoed it a bunch of times and never got on with its sound. Got it for free with Maschine 2.0...loving it now that I have really spent some time with it....great modulation options. I agree though...so disappointed I cant make my own wavetables from my analog synths and load them up...but I have Alchemy so I guess I will live ;p

i love massive, it's been my go to synth since i started producing, altho recently i always seem to be coming up with very similar sounds so have been using albino a fair bit.

One of my favorite UI's when it comes to synths has been Circle. It's super simple, easy to understand what everything does and how it works, while also being able to do so much. For some one like me that isn't necessarily trying to make the most complicated and crazy sounds, it's perfect. They also use that drag and drop functionality that I really liked about Massive. On top of that they also added an indicator to the envelopes that show the sound moving across the envelopes in real time. This may not sound entirely interesting but when you start linking these envelopes to different parameters it becomes one of the most useful features of the synth itself.

I also really like the use of darker colors for the UI. I have started to really dislike synths that use white or another bright color as the base color and then using black for knobs and sliders. Maybe I'm just getting old or something but when I've basically been staring at a synth for a couple hours it can be exhausting on the eyes when using those types of color schemes. I really wish more synths would offer alternative color schemes for their UIs.

Yeah totally, that envelope thing is the sort of stuff I'm talking about. Lots of good visual feedback instead of an unforgiving wall of knobs.

Definitely dark colors as well. Much better to have everything dark and then draw the eye in with brightness vs getting smacked in the face with light and trying to figure out which of these dark squigglies are important.

I feel like NI synths have a character that is kinda similar between all of them (Reaktro, Absynth and Massive anyway) that I dont like and cant get away from with patch making...but it is usually a little FX love or EQ cant take care of...

I do like CIrcle's envelopes and its sound. What I don't like is the black background with bright colors. Personally think your tripping if you think that doesn't burn your eyes and massive does.

Lemme say that, I've got a desk rack of gear below my monitors, and when massive is on the screen, it is seamless with my gear. Like it looks just like real gear. The color, the brightness, the contrast all match actual gear. The only thing that doesn't match is that the knobs are in the horizontal plane, rather than my gear which is at an oblique plane because it is like a foot or so below my line of sight. And that is a bitch, like I've got an Orban 662B Eq, it is stereo, and if I'm using it in stereo, I've got to set the right side the same as the left, and I'm always like scrunching and what not to see exactly where the knob is so I can match it on the other side. Pain in the ass, so nice when I look up at massive, ahhhh the hypothetical horizontal plane. ONE of the benefits of even using a vst in the first place. But then plugs that reproduce that oblique plane distortion. FUCK you knuckleheads! Hehe.

Re Massive's sound: It is very versatile. You can do a lot with it. If you're getting too samey with it, I suggest that is on you rather than the synth. But then my big decision in massive is, saw or square. :) I use massive for cleaner sounds.

I use Albino for duurty sounds. That thing is filthy. Every filter in there is durty burty. So much character. Too much character, I find it hard to use it in the mix as there is so much freaking noise, and it is all over the place. But still, I think albino is king for older kind of wobs.

Also, Albino's wavetables are much more interesting than Massive's. Fo show. Circle does have some good wavetables, also, imo.

Try just starting with a sine into the filter in albino, that shit gets so durty. Like using a square or a saw into the filter is like too durty, just too much noise and distortion. With albino I really try to design the patch into the mix, because I ALWAYS go overboard with patches in Albino, like they get too big too distorted, too fuzzy. They just won't sit. I find it is better to be a little more conservative with Albino, and you'll still end up in the deep end.
