Re: Ukraine
The EU has been known to dismiss as anti-democratic the referendums whose outcome they didn't like (See Ireland setting up the same referendum over and over until their people finally agree to sign European treaties).magma wrote:I think the main issue for the EU at the moment is whether that vote was a) legal and b) accurate/representative given that there was a big push to boycott the poll by Pro-Ukranian Crimeans.Nihilism wrote:I don't think that the EU knows what democracy means. If the majority of the voters choose for Russia, then there's nothing wrong or corrupted about. It's bad for the minority, but that's how democracy works.
Self determination is the way to go though... if they want to be Russian and Russia want them to be Russian, let them be Russian.

I'm sorry dude, not enough floride in my water to believe this.lurch wrote:US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned Russia about the Ukraine crisis, saying the “nationalistic fervor” in Crimea is similar to the build-up before World War II.
During a speech at the State Department on Tuesday, Kerry said he saw a “nationalist fervor which could, in fact, infect in ways that could be very, very dangerous. All you have to do is go back and read in history of the lead up to World War II, and the passions that were released with that kind of nationalistic fervor.”

Re: Ukraine
cba reading the updates in this thread but has anyone pointed out the fact that USA blatantly funded the Ukrainian coup so that USSR would cut off their gas deal with Ukraine and then America could swoop in and offer Ukraine a lovely tasty deal?

Re: Ukraine
Russia is saying that the US supported a coup and thus violated the Budapest Memorandum, therefore allowing Russia to move its military into Ukraine.
If you visit the wiki for the Budapest Memorandum, you'll see clever editors have already revised the entry to show that Russia violated the Memorandum by invading Crimea. So jokes, too bad everyone has to die though.

Russia violated the Memorandum by invading Crimea. .
so they did not "move" any military there
Re: Ukraine
And what did it say about annexing Crimea?
And you keep forgetting about the scope of those troops. Why do you keep forgetting?

last time i checked the news, Russia didnt annex Crimea unless recognizing the referendum by which a majority of Crimeans expressed their wish to join the Russian federation counts as annexion?
