Post by Doctor Glitch » Fri Mar 21, 2014 1:40 pm

What audio driver are you using? Asio4all only allows one program to use it in my experience. If you have a dedicated audio interface you could try using that driver.

I'm using the "Generic low latency ASIO driver" as I can only choose between that one and ASIO4all

It's actually how all interfaces are supposed to work. ASIO skips windows' mixer in order to output audio directly to the card because windows mixer has huge latency. Some interface maker out there figured out that if he designed his card to display itself as two devices to windows, ASIO could use one and windows mixer could use the other and both could be combine in the interface itself.

Now most cards do it, but it's actually one of the main reasons everyone used to see Macs as superior audio devices. You'll need a card that represents itself as two devices. Also, I think you can use WASAPI or some other new windows low latency driver type with windows Mixer and relatively low latecny too, but that's only if you have driver support for it.

I run ASIO4All and can still play stuff on my soundcard at the same time, idk why it works (because according to your logic it shouldn't) but I've never had an issue. I wouldn't use the Generic driver because that's crappy and laggy and I know that used to cause issues with playing from multiple sources but I've never had an issue with playing YouTube etc... at the same time as running Cubase.

Depends on which card. I've had even simple Soundblaster X-Fi devices that could show up as 2 devices (In device manager, nowhere else).

It's just a basic Creative Soundblaster Audigy one, swear it was like 15-20 quid... as far as I understood it, ASIO4All works as an interface to the soundcard and so that means the audio running from the DAW doesn't capitalise the output, allowing for other music to run through the normal channels it would.

It may also be down to the operating system you're using - that said, I had the same setup in XP and 7 and had no issue in either.

This same thing happened to me, I can't remember exactly how I fixed it but it was somewhere along these lines.

There's a setting somewhere, possibly within Cubase, where you can make your soundcard dedicated to one program or change it so that multiple programs can use the soundcard at the same time.

There is a setting in Cubase prefs where you can choose to release the ASIO driver while Cubase is in the background.
