Reggae "dun dun dun" sound + Other Questions (vocoder)

Post by xXGreenXx90 » Mon Mar 24, 2014 12:57 am

Hey I was wondering what instrument that "dun dun dun" sound is in reggae songs. It's in almost every reggae song I've heard and Skrillex also uses it in some of his song like "First Of The Year (Equinox) and Make It Bun Dem." Is it like a Reggae guitar or is there a specific name for it?

Could someone please give me a list of all the tools that can make your voice sound robotic, like similar to Daft Punk. I know one tool is a vocoder there is also this one I can't think of when you put this tube in your mouth and move your mouth to make noises.

It's a guitar playing up-strokes on the off beats.

The device you're describing is called a talkbox.

Like jonah said, the DUN thing is a guitar playing up beats. Sample it from some reggae tune, record it yourself or whatever, find some sample pack if thats what suits you.

Daft Punk DO use vocoders like you mentioned, the one with the pipe is called a talkbox, and can be bought for a few hundred bucks, but thats not what the use, at least not for their normal vocals(get lucky, around the world etc).
I need to stop changing my sig

Thanks bro helped me a ton! How did you learn all that? Is there a certain name for the guitar or is it just a regular guitar?

i am also curious on how to use a vocoder. how to "autotune" in a certain key instead of having to tweak every single note by ear.
