Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
i'm not saying all their tunes maaaan, i meant more those malfunktions/need fire/ firepusher tunes that came out recently didn't quite do it for me, i'm also not saying they are completely unmelodic/arhythmic
they just didn't excite me enough to cop the plates even though i could have just done so and totally raped someone on discogs for them a couple months down the line
i do like pirates a lot

hahah yeah i got you just wanted to spot how much i like those tunes. I think that the system ep is not their best too, and expected way more specially for the collab between them. BTW Buckwild remix from gantz is sooooo silly needs a release asap

yeah obvs context is important. but what's the point of releasing tunes that are built for a specific system? not like others are gonna play thereparticle-jim wrote:I think a big part of it is to do with hearing those tunes in the context of the night at System, personally I've really liked every release so far and all of the tunes do the damage on Vivek's rig, also whenever people are talking about the Firepusher EP nobody ever mentions Gantz - Second Nature which is fucking wicked
this is why i hate the "gotta hear it on a system" argument. fucking pointless. if your tunes are made just for that then fuck off press 20 copies and sell them to your dj buddies
and yeah second natures is the best tune from that ep, but dunno it's a bit too over the top imo
also las' non-dubstep stuff is much better imo

Shit argument that's often pointless. As you say, who gives one if it sounds amazing on a system. Unless you're DJing on fat system, which the vast majority aren't, then unless it sounds good at home, then what's the point?

Same thing i think goes for Rinse/mixcut rips, you're going to feel more energy off the tune if on the clip its got bare acetate crackle, warmth from a studio/radio compressor + Joe Nice/Youngsta/insert MC going hype in the background.
When 2 much chat came out I was a bit disappointed because it didn't have as much punch as it had in radio rips, mixes, etc.
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Ultraspatial tbh i think the tunes are built with systems in mind not just the SYSTEM
The only tunes i think you could argue that are built solely for Vivek's rigs are Vivek's own VIPs.
In the same way say Mungos might build a tune with their rig in mind, it'll still translate to other sounds well.
Firepusher is going to sound massive on anything

nah that one kenzo's been playing that sounds like mere sher, just doesn't seem to have the same punch as on the radio, maybe i'm just being an idiot and need to pitch up the tempo/volume

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Thing is though, think about how dubstep started. It was kids making tunes specifically for a system, who actually did fuck off to press only about 20-odd copies for their buddies from FWD, it exactly was what ultra's saying. I reckon the reason why thats such a huge argument in dubstep is because that is the root culture of this soundgarethom wrote:ultraspatial wrote:yeah obvs context is important. but what's the point of releasing tunes that are built for a specific system? not like others are gonna play there

Its the compression from the rip & studio, trust.RKM wrote:nah that one kenzo's been playing that sounds like mere sher, just doesn't seem to have the same punch as on the radio, maybe i'm just being an idiot and need to pitch up the tempo/volume
Same thing happened with me & Reflections (another Kenzo acetate), thought the rip sounded HOOGE then was listening in BM and it just sounded a bit, flat...? Bear in mind also the rips we are listening to for months before could have mixer EQ boosts/been pitched up or down/had a different mastering job on the final release.
I think the human ear naturally prefers the warmer, rougher sound of the compressed, slightly pumped rip than the v.precise, clinical mixdown that is on the final version. Part of why the early dubstep releases are sick is because of the rough sound, its not eq'ed to within an inch of its life, still has some warmth and is on the verge of being pushed too far (Thinking mud/ruffage, early D1 etc)
Spose its an interesting problem we have with radio/mix rip culture. Instead of only knowing a tune from the memory of a rave we have the opportunity to compare & scrutinize a clip of it for months before release.

it's not like the peeps buying the records just happen to have rigs at home or dj on the regular
all i'm saying is that if your tunes' selling points are just that they sound massive on a system the maybe the tunes aren't all that interesting in the first place IMO
not even talking about this one or any other specific release tbh. more aimed at the system argument
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
My point was that it only seems to be brought up when the tune is utterly boring.JizzMan wrote:Thing is though, think about how dubstep started. Didn't realise how sought after this tune was, pretty sure I pulled this out the £2 bin in Rubadub last week and didn't bother getting it.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
that's different from making the tunes available for the masses tho. then when someone complains the tunes are boring or w/e come out saying it's system music. like why did you made it public in the first place then? keep it as a dubJizzMan wrote:Thing is though, think about how dubstep started. Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
yeah I agree with you guys on that, it is a weak defence for a boring tune lol and it does destroy the point of releasing a tune if you're gonna keep saying it needs to be heard on a system. probably a huge reason why it lost a lot of appeal once more and more people got over the brostep phase and started digging deeper, and they come to places like this forum and get told about the truth on how to listen to dubstep

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
I think people misunderstood me, I wasn't saying you need to hear it on A system for them to make sense, I meant that after hearing Vivek play them at SYSTEM and how they fit with the whole vibe of the night is a big part of what makes those releases special to me, obvs how they sound on the rig has to do with that but I more meant how they fit with the whole System vibe as a whole

i got you. i just took the rant in a somewhat different direction (although to me these sound like the kind of tunes people would say "u gotta hear it on a system m8")

They have a £2 box thing, someone must've put it in there by accident then!Johnlenham wrote:It came out like 3 weeks ago, I doubt it was £2Liam92 wrote:
