Mixing trap kick vs dubstep kick

Post by Wolf » Sun Mar 23, 2014 11:30 pm

Just wrote my first song with any kind of real trap influence. When mixing dubstep I usually use multiband side chaining to let the drums hit through (low end of synths to kick, mids to snare, etc.) In this song, im using a kick that's 1/2 a sub and 1/2 an attacking "click" kick srhms. Should I just high pass the synths and let the sub kick fill out the bass frequencies or use the same side chain technique but have the attacking kick cut out the low end? Would this be too much bass with the sub coming through at the same time as the bus with all the synths?

Well honestly with trap it's all rooted 808 kickdrums coming from the style of Southern US hip hop production that came before it. The bass is usually just a 808 style kick with a long decay being pitched about to play a melodic line after some processing along the lines of some compression and saturation and the like to bring out some harmonics and emphasis the heavier weighty style needed in big dance floor centric trap beats. (listen to Lex Luger to hear the most obvious style of that sound I'm meaning). With the kick it's then a matter of just choosing a kick that is peaking at a higher frequency than the sub plus some filtering/eq to separate them then maybe some compression on a drum buss to glue it together. Most the synth lines then in trap tend to be lead lines then over the top so really overall it's a matter of less is more to make a beat that sounds heavy trap wise. I mean beyond the sound design aspect of it simply getting a balanced mix with the right elements playing of each other will sound much heavier and have more of an impact than shitloads of noisy sounds all compressed to hell and side chaining each other to fight for room in the mix. Then again I'm talking about the style that is closer to the hip hop roots of it all but just as a drop based style of dance music as that's what's popular trap wise. Based on the music you make I wouldn't be suprised if you're trying to do something with horrible brostep midrange bass, skrillex style snares and dweeby singing on top but I have no idea so if that's the case carry on doing what the hell you want as what I'm imagining there would be horrible.

@Wolf

It comes from that but it's not all that really. Trap has much more emphasis on stacking kicks.You want to either tune your topkick to your sub pitch, or if you are following a melody with your bottom kicks you wanna high pass the sub from the top. Your style will determine whether you keep your low mid of you're 'punchy kick' or not. See the second drop of the tune in my sig, as it deconstructs there to just the sub kick, but at all other times I'm using the same kicks from the dubstep drop from the start. If you listen closely as it deconstructs though, that kick only has sub on the 1. All other kicks in the 4 bar loop are hi-passed at about 70-90.

Sorry did not read the whole post but I assume you mean layering an 808 kick with a 'normal' kick?
I suggest reading this thread, was searching for smiliar tips recently. Maybe not totally what you're asking for but there's a lot of quality info about making 808s more powerful
