oh yeah, for sure. Economists know what they're doing for the most part but i feel that raising minimum wage is more of a "look how good we are to the poor people" move rather than anything substantial.garethom wrote:It's a very complex matter that I'm sure can't be solved by bods in the SNH with a couple of sentences.
No offence, but we'd probably only be chatting egg.

Just saying that it's probably not a matter of:m8son wrote:how is that different to every other single thread/discussion on here?garethom wrote:It's a very complex matter that I'm sure can't be solved by bods in the SNH with a couple of sentences.

- Increase in minimum wage will make poor people better off
- Increase in minimum wage will make things worse for everyone
It's a complex issue that has bits of both worlds in it, that nobody here really understands.
Don't mind people chatting wet, as long as they don't act like experts on it

Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
imo if u have a standard minimum wage, it has to be applied across the board so i don't think workers would be laid off as much as many people speculate. they still need the workers to produce the goods. some workers would be replaced by automation/machines but not as many as if they only increased the minimum wage for some types of businesses and not others.
instead the capitalists would try to pass the increase off onto the consumer. i say let them. i'm not an expert but i've heard experts say that studies show that the increase in prices is pretty minimal, we're talking about pennies (well, that was for a $10.10 minimum wage, not a living wage, but...).
i'd rather pay a bit more in prices and be able to use that extra consumer power to reward good companies with low prices than just pay more in taxes in order to subsidize all of those ppl who need welfare because they weren't paid a living wage. there would be more competition among capitalists to keep prices low, which is a good thing.
the bottom line is that we are paying for these people to live one way or another. bill maher said "if walmart won't pay their workers a living wage, then uncle sam has to." we can't just let ppl who actually work for a living and hold up their end of the social contract starve and be homeless. i'd rather it came from their paychecks than from our taxes.
not to mention, for all those concerned about the debt, increasing the minimum wage will lower the deficit because there will be less welfare. that's probably a good thing.
