It actually might not be detrimental as such, because of phasing, rogue sub freqs that get shifted etc.

Really, to be able do anything 'worthwhile' with Eq in the digital realm imo, you have to go by how it sounds and rid yourself of the notion that it isn't just tonal distortion. There was a common opinion for years that subtractive eqing sounded acceptable in the digital realm, but it's not actually subtractive it if causes a phaseshift
(it doesn't clean it up but just move freqs around).
Which they all do except for linear eqs that instead introduce a phase delay.
To me it's as simple as the rules of equing just doesn't apply in the digital realm.
