For some reason in Economics they decided, because theres only 4 units, a dissertation would be an optional unit so I avoided that piece of shit.. chose Econometrics instead which I just finished my report for. 74 bloodclart pages, worth 40%. Should have just done a dissertation.

Hopefully do a masters in Political Economy at some point so will no doubt have to do one for that.

Do you have to do a dissertation for every undergraduate degree?

Most, didn't for mine. It varies depending on course and uni but most final year undergrads do a dissertation.

Worth noting Eric that this choice while interesting for me wasn't too easy regarding research compared to most people on my course's choices. I mean pretty much no-one seems to have written about it specifically .Which is cool but it does make referencing stuff harder.

Science, engineering and medicine bachelors degrees usually don't require dissertations, unless you've picked a research project option in your final year. Masters degrees generally involve some form of dissertation. Arts and soft sciences undergraduate degrees usually require a dissertation I believe, or a prototype/concept/work in the case of a degree in design.

So something like computer science or psychology would mean I'd do a dissertation

My degree offered a less writing heavy more practical option too but that was more along the lines of researching and then building a professional quality microphone or synthesizer for example.

you can do a placement year instead with alot of them i think

but i didnt do it cus i dont have enough student finance

but yeah, you can do a year of real work during your 3rd year and then come back for a 4th year and just complete the core modules and exams

Creating an album may seem piss easy as an option but I think it's really hard to get high marks for it. I think one of my mates did that option on his degree and immediately regretted it in terms of what he would have to do to get any sort of decent grade.

Also everyone I know that did a science degree did a research based paper or dissertation

Yeah seriously don't do what I did. It was fucking horrible and made me feel like I was about to snap a number of times. Actually had to take a break and go to the pub and put tunes on the juke box and drink a couple pints for an hour to calm down on the last night.

When I finished it though I had like a couple hours nap and got a train straight to a festival though. Went and partied seeing Legowelt, Robert Hood and Blawan on the hand in day

lol I figured the best thing to write about would be music as the majority of my time is spent consuming it. Even when I procrastinated, to some degree it ended up helping my research.

I don't know if it's because I only had to write 5,000 words, but a dissertation isn't that hard as long as you've researched something well enough to have a multifaceted opinion on it. When you legitimately know what you're talking about you can write good shit relatively quickly. Another thing that helps researching widely discussed topics as it makes you aware of other sides to any arguments and bumps up your references. Apologies if I'm rambling, Wray & Nephew has that effect on me :w:
