what music do you guys learn to?

Post by jrkhnds » Mon Apr 07, 2014 4:49 am

yeah. currently preparing three presentations for uni, and I seem to be much more able to get into a studying flow when assisted by music.
I find myself listening to a shitload of burial. tried madlib/jaylib/madvillain, but the beats distract me too much. generic tech-house mixes work for me aswell, e.g. stuff by Sharam and Dubfire. things I don't usually listen to, but the unimpressive ump-ump seems to do the trick.

sometimes I reach for ambient mixes aswell, mainly without any drums, just pads and athmospheric soundscapes. nothing too experimental or "avant-garde".
this has me wondering why burial works so well for me...

so, what do you guys listen to to get into the "zone"?

also, how do you manage your pauses? I started to run a strict 45min work - 15min pause schedule, although I will neglect the pause when I'm onto something interesting / important / when I'm getting shit done fast.

Music really distracts me and slows me down. I only listen to it when I'm doing busy work (at this point music choice is whatever i'm into at the moment), never when I'm studying/learning.

I take a piss/food break when I'm done with something. I go over it a few more times when I come back and then start on something else.

If I'm doing a long night study sesh I'll usually listen to something driving and not too on-edge. Listening to jungle, if it's not Good Looking style stuff, or hip hop throws me off balance if I'm reading. The best to listen to is shit like Underworld, Future Sound of London's first album and similar lush 90's "electronica".

Jungle is learning-wise on the same level as brostep and happy hardcore. kills the vibe and all concentration.

will check out the BMT thingies!

i've found i got so used to working with music that i get too bored and unfocused without it
jazz and classical are obviously the one, herbie hancock-maiden voyage and headhunters i must have listened to 1000 times
otherwise mixes, the music has to be instrumental if i'm trying to read, b8 house ones are pretty good, sometimes dubstep but they usually get a bit to involved on mcs and noisy stuff

although this is usually great
[+] Spoiler
i actually rate jungle for work, had a few essays recently and listened to dj crystl and tom and jerry constantly (murky posted a sick all dj crystl one in the jungle thread)

if finishing up something late at night medi is the one: heavy as stone, protecting hands, spread love vibez

Ambient works used to be a favourite when I had essays at uni. Other more ambient stuff like biosphere and loscil was sometimes in order

Really productive: silence

otherwise something that I'm not too interested in that is quite relaxed, for me something like Boards of Canada

In my first 2 years I'd listen to Burials albums and that worked a treat.

Now though I either have:

no music on - but there has to be silence elsewhere too)
a radio show - very little speaking and very smooth mixing/similar vibe throughout, Artworks show is distracting due to the large sections of talking but Youngstas show and the Hessle show are normally good.
classical - normally beethovens 7th or 9th do the trick, or I find something in the classical thread.

Most of ASCs stuff is good for working as well, Auxcast podcasts, the Scope LP, Exit presents Mosaics vol.2. Just anything on an ambient tip really, although Boards of Canada is a bit distracting I find.

I done my last piece of work with Aphex Twins Selected Ambient Works on repeat.

I can't listen to any music while studying. I don't understand how people focus that way.
If it's new music I'm always listening for good stuff subliminally and if it's stuff I know
it just gets stuck in my head.

I end up zoning out and its just a constant background noise that blocks out any other noises. I have pretty shit concentration, uni computer rooms are a nightmare.. everybody just talking shit constantly.

I wanted to say no lyrics...but that would be a blatant lie....

Because I reach for Donald Byrds Street Lady when I'm in my studio...
and Toro y Moi Causers of this when I'm beading/assembling...

Burial got me through my senior project - Untrue

recordings of Thom Yorke's radio show have been playing recently
when I'm trying to focus - mellow hip-hop and experimental type stuff...

I used Boxcutters Oneiric in the CAD lab - every time

Joey Beltrams Boilerroom Berlin set...

I don't really think a specific music makes me concentrate -
Instead - When I find that a piece of music that gets me in the proper zone
...I then know to reach for it when I'm trying to get back to that specific mental place...

more like grafting a mood onto the music...
not necessarily a mood created by the music...
although I'm sure they have to be closely compatible...

ever have a bad life situation color over a favorite piece of music??

I have - you have to "re-write" back over it again - that can be rough...
it can be done though...

plastic mood flux
