First time in the pacific I went well beyond the breakers, out into just open water, where it is all quiet and lonely, a fucking head pops up next to me and puffs out air and a spray of water I was SO freaked the fuck out, I didn't know what was going on in that instant, it was a sea lion or a seal, just fucking with me, fucker looked at me, then just went back under.

Yeah there is shit down there (love seeing the dolphins swimming through breaking waves made translucent by afternoon sun in Malibu) but the bigger risk is that gigantic wall of water trying to cheese grate you onto grabby cragged rocks. Just find a 5 story building in your area, go to the base of it and look up, and imagine that thing is water and it is falling on you.
