Then you got a deal dude, they're on ebay for around $275. I see a lot on they're for around that at the "Buy it now" price. I'm sure if you shopped around for awhile you could scoop one up for like $175-$200

For just the plain 404? What card format where they? They were compact flash?

Yeah, compact flash. Also, I hooked up an sp-esque drum rack in ableton, and I'm having sooooooooooo much fun. I used five pads on my padkontrol to control the chain selector and then mapped three pads to mute drums, mute sample, and then another as a master mute. Fuck yeah.

Right on. That is the point of ableton, you can build devices to create a workflow, play the daw, and record and edit the results. Pretty compelling concept.

And dude, don't fall into this trap like music is this super serious thing, and everything you produce has to compete on the world stage, and rewrite the history of music, and be the pinnacle of human musical achievement. Now more than ever, making music doesn't get you anything in life, so make it how you want to. Creating a device like that, and having fun is where it is at. Try and make the whole process fun, so there isn't like this phase of song making where it is boring and onerous, where you always just abandon all your songs. Keep it fresh and fun and the songs will finish themselves.

And deadly, yeah teebs is a different kind of next level. He's kind of more subtle and gentile than the rest. His sound blending/mixing is kind of really advanced.

Lately I've been looking into writing custom remote scripts for ableton. I wanna turn my MPK into a powerhouse controller. It'd be slick to have a bunch of different modes to switch between, regular mixer view, device control view, arrange view, clip edit view with the rotary encoders controlling zoom, write head, midi note, zooming and selection... sheeeiit. How tight would be scrolling along through a midi clip with a knob, clicking and dragging with a button to insert notes, and using the slider to set velocity. Selecting notes by spinning 2 encoders, then changing their relative start and end points with another pair of encoders. Horizontal and vertical zoom with the next two faders, and the last two, fuck I could map them to screen brightness or some shit, I'd already have everything covered. Maybe loop start and end points? Then have a button mapped to duplicate note, duplicate loop, switch to envelope mode. Then maybe a shift button that changes the functions of the selection encoders to move between clips instead of within the current clip.

There's so much possible power. Like scrolling through the browser with one knob, scrolling within the audio sample preview with another, holding down a button and tapping a drum pad to load the sample into it, or another button to add it to the pad group if there's already a sample assigned to that pad. Tabbing over to the sampler instrument and adjusting the start and end points, pitch, ADSR, etc. Fuck me, I'd never touch a mouse again.

All the functionality of the Ableton Push is completely implemented in a remote script. It's just a dumb midi controller otherwise. All the lights, screen feedback, mode switching, control remapping, etc is all a script. There's so many possibilities to integrate the fuck out of the hardware you already have. Shit I've got a first generation nanoKontrol that might come out of retirement.

Can you do logical operations, like if then statements in scripts? One of the reasons I moved away from live, like I'd get close to setting up devices the way I wanted, but I always needed little bits of logic, the ableton forum was always like max, max, max.

Yep, it's all python code. Max4Live has gotten pretty powerful but I don't wanna have to have a bunch of max devices inserted. I'd rather code the behavior behind the scenes and have it be all slick from the get go.

I wonder if you could build a DIY Push and then clone the script for it. That guy did it for the launchpad and it's really well done. But if you cloned the Push to a T, you could make it behave identically. Wonder how expensive it'd be to implement 64 velocity sensitive pads, touch strip, and x amount of touch encoders and buttons. You know ableton's marking that shit up but they're also mass producing.

It's cool knowing you can just build any arbitrary hardware controller and implement all its advanced behavior in software.

I gotta say ak.sys for file transfer via usb for the MPC4000 sucks ass. Had to set it up in a virtual XP machine for starters and it stops mid transfer half the time. Anyways learning this beast bit by bit messing with mute groups atm and have a fresh stack of wax for potential sampling and a couple bit i just need to chop up. One thing I'm struggling with is the pseudo sidechain effect you can do on it http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=164938
Thankfully I have the 8 out card so I can just sync it with cubase and my gear and actually sidechain and route to my UAD effects, but yeah best purchase I've made in ages. I always loved crate digging for samples and making beats , but even with midi pads it wasn't the same even though I churned out a few decent beats like these without an MPC.

Something tells me I'll have an LP of hip hop shit soon enough and if I have the cash a proper small cassette release to make it proper.

I like the pitch instability dh. I'm a sucker for it. I'm almost done with drums, just gonna make warbling synth/string lines with texture from here on out.

DH - we're doing TUNA! down in the production contests subforum, a track a week. It is a great device to keep you working. Been going a while now, good people down there, good feedback. You and anybody else that is up for really making a track a week is welcome.

Sidechain tricks - resample your lines to be sidechained with a +12db 10hz sine on a pad, and play that pad with your kick rhythm. Take that resampled line and hit it with a comp. The 10hz sine will be inaudible, and will pump the comp like crazy. Set threshold just above highest music peaks, but well below 10hz sine, with high ratio. Later, before the mastering, filter out the 10hz. Ghetto sidechain on the fly.

http://delamanchavst.wordpress.com/2013 ... /unstable/ one of my secret weapons along with wow & flutter on http://www.interruptor.ch/vst_donationware.shtml when i'm too lazy to run to actual tape
it's how along with some saturation and such I got that old school Giallo 70s soundtrack sound on a lot of my tunes.
Always after that sound like

Funny how much cleaner their soundtracks are on wax or cd vs the actual film prints.

All over Unstable, but wow and flutter... it has been a long time, could it have been a decade? A very long time ago, some of those plugs crashed my machine really hard. How are they coded do you know? Synthedit?

Might be, pretty sure unstable is synthedit as well, gave me headaches time to time crashing projects. Still less of a headache than running to tape for and rewinding etc.

Unstable just crashed the hell out of my last project, is it that synthedit one instance thing? Can I rename various instances of the unstable dll?

Is it legit or cracked, i had a headache with the cracked mainly till i spent the like 10$, but yea it is a synthedit thing. and you should be able to rename it.

yeah it's a synthedit thing i swear, the shame is a couple of my go to plugins are synthedit and make it hit or miss if my mixdowns will open.
