Re: [POLL] Greatest 'Dubstep' record label?
I'd say there's no more than 5 singles that aren't dubstep. And they aren't the latest ones, for sure. And even those are bass heavy dark room skankers.

Hessle, hands down. most consistent, and it's impressive how you can listen from HES001 to HES026 and it all just makes sense. not a single release was obvious or predictable, yet in hindsight every single release fits right into the spot they accorded to it. and the tunes age really well (except the Elgato ones, I think. not quite on the same level as the rest).
Punch Drunk has put out some favourites, but also a couple of plates I don't really care for.
Tectonic is sick, although I just took a look at their catalogue and there are a lot of forgettable tunes aswell.
Skull Disco catalogue feels more like a concept album imho.
Deep Medi deserves the votes for the antisocial releases alone.
DMZ for the anthems. Neverland is in dubstep GOAT's top 3.
Tempa & Hyperdub should be in there though.

they are very good, don't get me wrong. but compared to Dance 'Till The Police Come, Kingdom, The Bells Sketch, Lola. Porcupine ... not mentioning Router, Anaconda etc. they seem a bit less substantial. nothing I could explain, just personal preference.

tbh I find it hard to look at Hessle as a Dubstep label, quite obviously they started as one but unlike most they started to excel during the shift towards slower tempos. It's kinda like calling Reinforced a Hardcore label, yeah they started out as one but they went on to do much greater things as a Jungle label. Hessle are gonna go on to do greater things outside of Dubstep.

It's not like he dislikes Vivek or something.

Tempa for the beginning. Otherwise Medi. Why is Tempa not on the list? I voted for other. I think there are a lot of newer labels that could go on to great things though. Artikal, Lion Charge, System, Innamind...
Re: [POLL] Greatest 'Dubstep' record label?
I think all those labels mentioned would name dmz as the greatest ever.
Purely because the the reason they set up a label was because they become inspired at one of their nights or by a record of theirs.
I think sometimes forget how influential dmz was back in the day.
Ask Ben UFO, shakleton, pinch, peverlist what inspired them and dmz will be mentioned somewhere

Re: [POLL] Greatest 'Dubstep' record label?
its so obvious that dmz is gonna win, who needs a poll
there might even be other labels i rate in terms of quality of the tunes and the vibe/vision they were about (skull disco...), but it's just impossible to deny how dmz are basically the dubstep equivalent of the belleville three. no one else is more influential. half of all dubstep "anthems" are dmz tunes
some options sadly missing (tectonic, big apple, tempa). i hardly think of hessle as a dubstep label, but if i did it'd be a top runner up. one of the most consistent and well curated labels ever. apple pips i never really considered much of a dubstep label either, despite some really good releases i dont think id say theyre "greatest".

hyperdub for me
was going to vote for skull disco at first, but idk it's not exactly a proper label. neither is dmz imo

Re: [POLL] Greatest 'Dubstep' record label?
yeah. definitely my favourite label that came out of this scene
released some of the best and unique dubstep and expanded to other types of music years before other labels
burial is responsible for shitloads of attention towards dubstep
no other tune gave a me a wtf moment like ikonika's please
it's been consistently good throughout the years - i dislike only one release so far; which yeah, i can say about a few other labels (skull disco, berkane sol, keysound, punch drunk, hessle, hemlock, 3024, 7even) but their catalogue is nowhere near as big as hyperdub's - as opposed to releases i cannot stand one bit or that are so unremarkable that i forgot i own from some of the other big labels (medi, dmz, tempa, black box/box clever)
