I was at college with this guy when I was doing my A Levels. Used to see him walking around Exeter a lot. He was in one of my mate's classes. Which made it even funnier when we found this video.particle-jim wrote:I prefer this one:wub wrote:This is probably mine;

I'm sure it was less politically charged than history will tell you now.
The embargo had at least something to do with not wanting cuban boxers earning money in las vegas and that the us national baseball team got beaten every time by these god damn commies.

it had back then. it was huge games on tv. with japan and other countries invited to play in an international cup on us soil. but the US lost a couple of times and decided to just focus on the world series instead. im sure that was more about being embaressed than the revenue aspect though.rayman612 wrote:I dont think national baseball teams have as much influence as you thinkhubb wrote:I'm sure it was less politically charged than history will tell you now.

the real lobbyist weight came from casino owners in las vegas, that didn't want the cuban boxers to ruin their whole set up. If you look at the olympics you can see how many weightclasses the cubans win in boxing. it's ridiculous.
boxing was such a huge deal economically back then. hbo was basicly made and funded exclusively by boxing in the beginning etc.
but to be fair Ray, it's this same discussion again where you're somewhat offended that anyone would talk about how the US has changed so much and yet not having experienced it themselves. Imo that's your issue.

Yeah... sorry but I'm not sure it was a thing for long, what I'm saying is the US quickly decided it was a bad idea. But I recall being told (don't know) that naming it the world series came before the decision to exclude other nations. I'm on thin ice here. I'd recommend the comedian greg proops' podcast though where he at times goes in on baseball and talks about the negro leagues etc. Sports history says alot about racial relations just like music does in the US, just saying.rayman612 wrote:Yea its prob that or w/e
