This is correct and the European union said they wouldn't be able to use Euros either as it defeats the whole point of going interdependent.

When this got brought up before, I suggested letting them become independent, then on the day of independence, going in, taking over by violent force, renaming them England North and making them wish they'd never brought it up in the first place.

Also, Scotland would have to reapply for EU membership. Which means whilst they are are applying, they would not qualify as part of the EU free trade zone, so import and exports would be charged the appropriate duties.

I'll be voting NO in September. Far too much uncertainty surrounding EU membership and currency if we were to go independent.

Lowering the voting age to 16 for the referendum is definitely a ploy to get the Braveheart and the I fucking hate the English mob to vote YES :a:

Na they won't. Its funny the Scottish government basically came out and said "don't worry, if we leave we'll still use GBP and be in a monetary union with UK" and the Bank of England came out and said "will you fuck m8s".

The Royal Bank of Scotland probably wouldn't operate in Scotland because Natwest are a massive part of RBS and they're allowed access to the Bank of Englands liquidity and majority of their business is in the UK.

RBS not operating in Scotland lol.

tbh, i think the parts about "you won't be able to use EUR and will have to reapply as a EU member" are probably just empty threats. yes, this is what should happen in theory, but then again the case of a nation seceding from a EU member state has never happened before... if it does, a way will be found so that the transition is as frictionless as possible i expect

obviously the EU institutions are going to try and prevent this from happening, they don't want others with similar revendications to jump the secession bandwagon (catalonia wink wink b2b the fact the polls showed a continent-wide tendency of distrust towards EU)

Actually, it's unknown if they would have to as the EU has not released a statement.

The EU has actually offered to publish the institution's stance if the sovereign government of the UK, i.e. the British parliament, were to ask for it, yet obviously Cameron has deliberately not done so. The SNP want it published. I can find the article if you don't believe me...

I know because I've frequently had to argue with well-intentioned pro-independence people on opendemocracy.net and to be honest the 'No' campaign, though run by bastards let's be honest, have surety on their side. The amount of times I've proved people wrong by just typing whatever in to google and showing people, they shut up after that but some dickheads try and pretend they were saying what I did before me what :?

I think Scotland would be do alright independent though, but there's no clear path on where it's going to end up right now. They have oil and a decent attitude towards the population at least, well better than the UK in general right now...

They can also use the pound and euro because you can trade them as reserve currencies. Bit of an arse but you can do it, as some countries already have like the dollar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... f_the_euro. Scotland just wouldn't be able to print its own money etc.

If they do get their independence its not really good for anyone in the long run.

I wonder what Begbie thinks about this?

The whole thing sounds about as viable as Quebec separating from Canada after the next election and imploding under the strain of their own corruption.

Wouldn't Scotland disintegrate into clans pretty quick without English overlords?
And would punch-ups be legalized?

What's the first question on a Scottish immigration form?

Let them fail on their own, then we can have a vote on whether to let them back into Britain

I honestly think they would be okay outside the UK, the economic case is already settled theoretically.

They'd be fine for now, but membership of the UK provides a future stability that they'd find it hard to achieve on their own or even that the EU could provide. Not that it can't be done, but with North Sea Oil running out (I read an article this week saying under 10 years left) they'll need some serious new industry if they want to be a new Finland like Alex Salmond would like to predict. It's not like they've got a behemoth like Nokia to rely on... and a few of the biggest financial businesses operating in Scotland that they might hope to rely on have said they might even head to London if independence goes ahead.

I think it's worth remembering the context in which Scotland joined the Union and how much national identity and devolved power they already have. It wasn't a conquest. Scotland still fly their flag and they've currently got more control over their own government than ever before. I'm not really sure what, apart the sentimental, Scottish people expect to achieve from seceding if I'm honest. Short term might well go fine, but political union is never about the short term.
