New Set of Monitors( Share experiences)
Im looking into buying a pair of new monitors and know the usual go to the store and try them out gig but i would want to hear some experiences of monitors you guys like to use or are using. I have narrowed my search down to 4 different pairs and all around the same price. I'll be heading to guitar center tomorrow or this weekend and make my final decision there. Cant really find any cheaper ones online tbh.
Heres the ones im looking at
http://www.guitarcenter.com/KRK-Rokit-P ... 3141605.gc
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Yamaha-HS5- ... 3058509.gc
http://www.guitarcenter.com/JBL-LSR305- ... 3225344.gc
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Mackie-MR6m ... 3225362.gc
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer-T ... 2540347.gc
Im leaning more forward to the yamaha or the mackies at the moment. The Behringer and yamahas have a couple year warranty and if anything goes wrong with either or i can send them in and just replace them with a different set on monitors.
I'll be mixing a lot of heavy bass music, some glitch-hop,dubstep, DnB, neurofunk, and downtempo stuff like Clams Casino and xxyyxx.
Thanks for any info!

wrong forum innit, loads of stuff bout this in producers forum.
I have hs5's tho, rly like them - they dnt sound nice but thats what u want, they dnt lie to you by makin crap sound nice.. had to get the sub as wel cos on their own there is no bottom end but with most any speaker in price range ur looking at the bass will lack. imo they r the best out of what u listed. TBH go to a shop n try a bunch out, its v subjective.

But if you are in the US I would also look into Equator Audio D5s or D8s. I have the D5s, which really for bass music don't have enough low end, but I feel like in my weirdly shaped room I may be better off. The D5s run 399 a pair and you have 60 days to return them if you don't like them (you can only buy them factory direct). They tend to cost a whole lot more in Europe for some reason. The D5s beat the pants off anything in your list IMO. I've worked on a fair few on your list and owned Rokit 6 G2s.

Re: New Set of Monitors( Share experiences)
I checked out the equators, they look really good for the price but I already ordered a pair of HS7 yammies for $384 USD from some guy on ebay. Factory new and sealed with the receipt just incase i need to send them in. He's on of those ebay direct dealer types so I scored there!
I went into GC the other day and imo the HS7's sounded the best. The rokits & mackies sounded like shit and they didnt have any behringers to try out. They actual come in tomorrow! So im super exited to break them in the next couple days. The only thing left to do it treat my room. I might buy that 50$ behringer mic and test the frequency response of my room and do some DIY treatment. I think one thing might be a problem.... I have around 4 guitars in my room and 3 of them hang on the a wall pretty close to my speakers. Could I put some absorber panels behind each guitar and plug the sound hole or would I need to get a guitar rack? I often hear bad frequencies and rattling against on that side of the room.

I can't speak for the rokit 6, Ive got the 5's and my only issue with them is the low end. But this is to be expected considering how tiny they are. Seems like the 6 would be perfect, basically a 5 with some more low.

I went and listened to loads of monitors in a shop the other day and the hs ones were by far my favourite in the price range. I'm going to get some hs7s tomorrow i think

are there any monitors in the price range with enough low end? does one need a sub for bass music?fragments wrote:I have the D5s, which really for bass music don't have enough low end

The 6's are a tad better but it's the 8's you really want if you're after something that is actually gonna move some air in the low endantman wrote:I can't speak for the rokit 6, Ive got the 5's and my only issue with them is the low end. Re: New Set of Monitors( Share experiences)
As for just having low end response, sure...you just need a big enough monitor : ) As for accurate low end, likely not. As for the last question, I think for most people on this forum a sub will cause more problems than it solves. Also, depending on your monitors a sub might not be needed. In a treated room prosumer grade 8inch monitors will probably get the job done.flood wrote:are there any monitors in the price range with enough low end? does one need a sub for bass music?fragments wrote:I have the D5s, which really for bass music don't have enough low end
I'm not sure if I would call any of the entry level monitors GC sells prosumer grade. I'd be willing to be the Equator D8s would be pretty damn good. I here things I would fix in a lot of "pro" mixes on my D5s.
Again, for 90% of the people on this forum...spending 800+ on monitors isn't worth it. I dunno if that 90% consider themselves hobbyists, but that is basically what they/I/we are. Personally, if I ever get an album or EP together that I really feel has any kind of commercial potential I'll take it to a studio, sit in and have it mixed properly the first go around then worry about getting my own studio together.
I really feel like this whole trend of the all-in-one musician is as silly as those one-man-band goof balls you see in tourist areas. Music has gone from being collaborative by necessity to whatever it is we have now...people doing it all from their bedroom. Which is actually fine, it would seem plenty of people are making quality releases as hermit solo artists...anyway

If you're into the HS series, check out yamaha MSP series. Made by the same guy who made the NS10s, most people will prefer these to the HS ones!
