Buying a pair of KRK

Post by Pablomax » Fri Jun 06, 2014 9:50 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been saving money to buy a couple of KRK, I can spend up to 400 euros, but don't want to pay for something that i'm not gonna use properly. I've been looking around in different forums and i'm over the RP5 RoKit G3 and RP6 RoKit G3 models. I'm gonna use it to produce electronic music into a 3x3 meters room, mainly uk garage, 2 step, jungle and dubstep so the sub presence is essential.

What's your opinion about it? Wich model should I get?

Thanks in advanced

I wouldn't have gotten any of the Rokits, as they color the sound, which will make mixing harder. Get a flat pair of monitors instead!
I need to stop changing my sig

5 inch tweeters would be more than sufficient for a room that size.

Another vote for going this route.

I mean if you insist on the Rokits, they will sort you. But someday you'll buy another pair of monitors and think about the year(s) wasted mixing on Rokits. Pretty much what happened to me. I saw them in all the masterclass vids and all that...TBH...I don't care if Big Name Producer X has them in his studio vid...doesn't make them good.

can you get 2nd hand adam a5's for that? If so maybe look in that direction if you're going for 5" woofer, least you'll get some sweeeeeet transient response.

This.

I'd go with the Adams option for that price range.

Gonna hijack this thread a bit, do you or Benjamin have any recommendations for monitor stands for the d8's?

Not really man. I have some cheap ass adjustable ones. I also have Auralex pads between the monitors and stands. They are OK. VERY Occasionally I still get bass resonance.

I love my KRKs, i have the 8's. People knock them a lot, but everyone who actually has them likes them. I dont think they color that much, and OP you said you want low end power, thats what KRKs are known for. They might not be the flattest monitors, but I really like mine, especially with the low end response. Ive had them awhile and have no complaints. between my KRK RP8's and ATHM50x I think my mixes are fine. I dont think that if you were to go with KRKs you would all of a sudden not be able to mix properly... Its all about knowing your system. They are great monitors, there is a reason they are so popular

After read lot of forums and listen diferent people tell me about how krk coloured sound, just decide it to go for Yamaha hs 5 or JBL LSR 305. In that case, wich ones u think are gonna have a flatter answer or wich ones would you recomend me?

Yamaha, Adams or Equators are the only sensible option between the 400-500 mark.

My mate actually picked up a pair of Genelec 8020Cs for 350 GBP in perfect condition, maybe a few surface scratches.

Ebay, the european equivilent to gumtree, or craigslist is your friend.

The good thing about gumtree/craigslist is that you get a lot of people selling off stuff for cheap cause they're broke and need a quick sale.

Take advantage of crack heads.

People talk about KRK low end like it's amazing but I have to constantly reference my tracks on my car sound system because my Rokit 6 get shit for low end unless I'm blasting the volume. My 808's or subs in some tracks are literally inaudible at safe listening levels while mixing down, it's the most frustrating thing in the world

I think what people don't realize is that KRK say, 8-10 years were fucking great for the price but others have brought their prices down but kept the quality the same.

KRKs are now the Beats of the music world. Sure they might look good in your studio cause everyone knows the brand and its not like they're terrible and you shouldn't even touch them but honestly the thing with monitors is you buy a pair and they'll last upwards of 10 years if you look after them.

Spending 600-1000 on a pair of monitors are not just an investment into your production but also how you listen to music in general. You listen to a classic record on vinyl, on a pair of high end monitors and you will actually have a revelation.

Buying low end/low-mid range monitors will only be more expensive in the long run cause you're going to spend 400 now, then 800 later, when you could just spend 800 now and never want to upgrade.

The reason they are so popular is that people are like sheep.
Go and a/b them against Adam F7's / Equator D8 / Presonus Eris E8 or Yamaha HS8 and they show flaws very easily.
