Not really, honestly not much in the military realm translate into civilian employment besides being a military contractor, while we used cisco gear and such we also used outdated and also specialized stuff as well._ronzlo_ wrote:That's solid. but Network Switching Systems Operator-Maintainer is what it is.
Data and voice network setup and operation.![]()
You trained in Georgia?
Matter of keeping up with certifications as well, it was kind of a cakewalk for me since I did phone phreaking and networking pre the army, but my programming skills kind of went to waste and went rusty.
Pretty much the reason I'm getting a degree now and aiming for master as it's what's required to get in for an interview half the time (that and I'm sick of sales/retail be in management or whatever positions).
And yea trained in GA for basic and AIT way back in 01-02

I think military experience probably looks good on your resume. It shows that you are trained and disciplined to potential employers.deadly habit wrote: Not really, honestly not much in the military realm translate into civilian employment
Re: So been awhile ninjas
I'd think twice about that. There is propaganda that returning veterans are the greatest threat to national security.

Then why do vets make up a large percentage of the homeless population?mks wrote:I think military experience probably looks good on your resume. + what nwsj said
I also dont want to generalize here, but a lot of people in service aren't exactly the smartest after doing said service. You may be well disciplined, but you also have no real concept of how the world works outside of a military base due to the large amount of brainwashing you've been a part of. Watch The Price is Right and see how far off a military person is on guessing prices.
Re: So been awhile ninjas
I don't know, I went to school with some vets and they all got jobs. It's a good idea that you're going back to school Deadly. I'm in the same boat. A lot of people won't even look at your resume unless you have a Bachelors.
So I also went the certification route. That at least got me to some interviews.
You have experience with what you did in the military Deadly, and once again I think it will probably look good on your resume.

Honestly that whole vets preference hiring thing etc is a load. Been plenty of time I was looking for a job/ANY job that I was overqualified for be in warehouse work/manual labor shit just since the job market was so shit I would take anything I could commute to so I was making some money and not sitting on my ass all day.
Got the oh you're a vet, thanks for your service, but we think you're overqualified/not the right fit/etc.
Actually went off on one interviewer who gave me the damn spiel with a, "If everyone's so damn grateful how about giving me a fucking job, fuck!" as I walked out heh. (Had heard it way too many times at that point and just snapped out of frustration)
And yeah there are a SHITLOAD of homeless vets from a wide demographic of age/race/branches.
Place I was temporarily staying actually had people who just were getting out recently done with a deployment with nothing to fall back on.
Just getting my shit together with the PTSD has been a toll, taken me 10 years to get my head semi clear, yet still need meds and more therapy.
Plus VA disability claims, or anything paperwork related is a nightmare to navigate, especially when they fucked up your DD-214 and it's missing your deployment and awards.

Meh it's humbling, but shit happens I just want to get off welfare. First time I've taken public assistance in any form, never even collected unemployment before.
Fuckin system is designed to keep you down and struggling if you don't have the willpower to trudge through it.

maybe you should not reveal that you're a vet, if that's possible. i know it says "if you lie you'll be prosecuted blah blah blah" on all the job apps but i've never heard about people being prosecuted over things like leaving out jobs they've been fired from for example. i doubt anyone would ever be prosecuted over leaving out the fact that they're a vet, especially since that's widely considered a good thing.deadly habit wrote:Honestly that whole vets preference hiring thing etc is a load. Re: So been awhile ninjas
It would be a matter of a long gap in employment and explaining how I'm trained/certified on pieces of network gear plus the awards look good at times to diff employeers. Being back in school has helped me a ton in revising my resume.jags wrote:how so?deadly habit wrote:Meh it's humbling, but shit happens I just want to get off welfare. It keeps you below poverty level, they make appointments that are mandatory during your work/school schedule in spite of them knowing, if you use their work program you intern just to keep benefits all the while looking for a job.
IE: I'm lucky to be going to school as they wanted me working as I enrolled in school before all the meetings they force you to have and wouldn't budge. I do on average 10-18 credit hours a semester vs 40 hours of interning to keep my benefits. My benefits are $181 of food stamps a month and for 2 years $91 twice a month to cover everything including rent (this started in the shelter i was in where i was getting $10 a month for close to 5 months, so a good chunk only $10 all month), shit food stamps don't cover etc. Thankfully as a vet i'm in a nice part of the city with a coverage on my rent and utilities to allow me to go to school and not end up back in a shit job, otherwise I'd be fucked. It's hard explaining to professors and such you need to leave for a DHS appt or else during a test or lecture whatever.

Re: So been awhile ninjas
With the degrees that you are working towards, there is a very sensible through line that will look very good on a resume. If you develop a life affirming habit, you will really be on to something.
Re: So been awhile ninjas
I, Jesslem, am back too. But you guys are probs salty about that.
I'll keep myself in better check though.
