Mumdance - The Sprawl

Post by rickyarbino » Mon Jun 16, 2014 10:05 am

Soundcloud

I've never really gotten this guy's music but this is utterly outrageous. I can't get any kind of feeling or vibe out of it. Can't imagine it being appropriate or additive in any situation.
Just sounds like a bleeps and squelches sample pack demo to me.
What are your thoughts?

All that melts away when the lights are down and the bass is up.

Love pretty much everything Mumdance has done, this one's a favourite:

mumdances stuff always sounded kind of whacked out and weird to me, his stuff with Logos I like though.
His Unknown to unknown record tho>>>>

edit: ha, I like Spring time more but yeah.

I find Springtime a bit annoying for some reason, the synth kinda pisses me off, don't know why :cornlol:

Much prefer his more percussive stuff.

That one's a little better, but his stuff is too far up itself imo. There's a fine line between the wacky/goofy stuff that sounds good and sounding like someone with ADHD who routinely smokes crackspliffs while making tunes, he crosses it consistently imo. I can't even follow any rhythm in The Sprawl until the first 4 bars of the third drop, then it wanders off again.

The pads in the breakdowns are sample worthy though.

Yeah, don't see what's wrong with sampling them though to be honest.

The Sprawl is almost really good. But it's kind of really empty a lot of the time. Heard some new Bloom out recently (I'm assuming it was him anyway) that was similarly crazy but with more going on that I preferred.

Imo, Mumdance is the brostep equivalent of something like this:

I don't really like it when UK music tries to go full IDM like that. Like jess said, it's a bit up its own arse isnt it.

Frankly a lot of UK music these day is lacking the straight out dance floor ruffness-while-being-fresh thing that made it good in the first place…I think that's the appeal of Juke and hip hop for fans of dubstep/jungle etc these days, that music has none of that shit.

Spare me the tunes that are just a wanky series of sonic references to grime and jungle strung together without punch or vibe. Oh, here's the jungle telephone noise…"Anything test dead" hmm yes I know that one…oh it's the synth from DJ Wonder-What, you must know grime my lad. And here's some pointless hi-hat triplets. Oh and you've got a classic reese under it all. That's what you call "varied influences" or something on factmag.com. All these classic noises, just spliced up after each other like a tumblr blog. Just used in an aesthetic, fashion way.

Maybe I'm a bit overly para about that, cus I can't really point to a single tune that does this horribly badly, but I just sense its a growing trend like that.

@harkat I can see your point and in parts it does feel like that sometimes but I still think it's people being over critical(Well people mostly on forums), I would also say there's too much of people instantly shitty on things straight away(Although this has always happened with the internet it's more noticeable)and not giving a things a chance to grow. Any sort of scene that growing now is under huge amount of criticism unlike the ones before it.
