It absolutely is, if you've seen his stand ups and have seen loads of his interviews his TV show is a bit of an adaptation of his stand up and his stand up is about his life experiences adapted to a stand up format. I recall in the first series he actually plays out some of his bits.

He even has 2 kids (daughters), divorced and does comedy at that underground place. I don't know how you couldn't see it as a fictional exaggerated version of himself.

I agree Louie and Curb are very different but the general format, a fictional exaggerated version of themselves, is essentially the same. I'm sure Larry David wasn't the first to do it either, a lot of comedians do it. Even guest roles such as Ricky Gervais, Doug Stanhope, Jerry Seinfeld all sorta play fictional versions of themselves.

It's been a pretty accepted format since I Love Lucy!

Ofcourse it has similarities and he probably had to sell this idea on the basis of other already established formats in tv.

But... I dont see anything about his personality being exaggerated here.
Not to the level of the others mentioned anyway and the sincerity, honesty or the need to not shield himself is so apparent that imo it turns into something else.
It's closer to what we'd expect from an author, than from a comedian.

Sometimes situations that appear in the show seem unrealistic - like the other shows mentioned, but then it's usually internal thoughts, a monologue or his opinions projected onto the world and rarely just like a usual sitcom setup.

It's not that important tbh, just that it's nice that one of the more serious shows has a footing in comedy and that it takes so much inspiration from film instead.

I don't think he had to sell the idea at all, he already had a HBO show which was pretty similar. Lucky Louie I think it was called.

Which is why hes one of the most, if not the most, talented comedian alive today. I don't get how you can't see it being an exaggerated version of himself.. its even called Louie. His life is almost identical to his own and the scenarios are often ones hes done bits about throughout his career, which presumably are exaggerated scenarios hes experienced in his life. Surely you don't think Louis CK made up a fictional character who, purely accidental, had his job, lived in the same city, has 2 daughters the same age and is divorced

Its an exaggerated version of him the way he portrays himself in interviews and in his stand up.. other than that where have you seen him portray a personality which is different? I presume you don't know him personally...

hubb wrote:It's not that important tbh, just that it's nice that one of the more serious shows has a footing in comedy and that it takes so much inspiration from film instead.
I agree its not important I'm just baffled anybody could argue its not based on himself lol. I agree he probably has taken inspiration from film but its still the same TV format and I enjoy the drama side to it a lot. Check out his other show, which was nowhere near as good but again a similar format.. played himself. I think he mostly learned from that and took it in a different direction.

edit; I sorta get what you mean though I think its just a case of being so far into the show now that they need to build some sort of solid storyline and as the seasons progress it becomes less and less about his actual experiences and more a fictional character. It certainly started out as an exaggerated version of himself though I reckon.

Oh lol, ofcourse he is playing himself that's not my point.
I just meant it's not that exaggerated. As such the persona isn't unrealistic or over the top like Larry for example.

I can't belive we've been discussing the wrong word lol

Yeah I agree its a little more toned down than Larry.

Has anybody seen Orange is the new Black? Keep seeing it advertised, can't decide if it looks shit or not.

It's not a very good show tbh and on the basis of that I assume directing, editing, planning, acting and writing wasn't on the cards but his pilot must've been great - also fx must've lept at the chance to get a 'hbo' like show. They've given the same sort of freedom to Jim Jefferies and his show legit, but it's much more sitcom. Still worth a go.

Orange ... is ok. Good acting but a little bait in how it's like oz for women.

Yeah I wasn't a massive fan of Lucky Louie, Louie is a massive improvement.

Might give Orange a go.. although still got Hannibal to start.

I enjoyed OITNB a lot more than I thought I would tbh... not quite ripped into the second series like we did the first, but that's probably because the World Cup's on and we accidentally got addicted to Sons of Anarchy, which is a bit ropey and predictable, but FUN.

Yeah I have no doubt its one of those shows where you can watch it numerous times and pick up different things each time. Its why I wanna read the King in Yellow first.

I disagree. The show makes you care about the characters so much it is impossible to stop watching until the end.

Plus I have a secret desire to be in a biker gang.

I fucking hate the way Jax walks though.
