that tune makes me sad. All this homaging to the UK nuum music in the scene recently is so shit. That benton tune Brian, this tune, the Paul Woolford shit etc. A few of those tunes are alright musically but I hate everything about those nostalgic bullshit vocal samples.

Its so wanky and self-congratulatory. When this shit starts happening you know the actual value of the scene is fucked. Young, relevant scenes dont have to masturbate about themselves like this. It's wide open for something realer and fresher to come along and put it in its place. Its sad cus I guess before jungle, garage, dubstep etc was actually the raw shit that made boring electronica and techno look old. But now, theres no shortage of tunes made by hipster shits featuring naive, nostalgic vocal samples in working class accents about how great the london sound was and what not.

That kind of nostalgic, wanky shit is NEVER the way forward.

Shouts to the few who are actually pushing the true shit forward, and not making such a fucking embarassing fuss about it.

His sets are a bit technoish for my taste but certain tunes like that one are incredibly big to me.

Wether beneath specifically is new is besides the point tho.

I guess its that simple right

Whatever tho, at the end of the day I can still go to record shops and pick out shit I like and go to nights, and none of this bullshit enters the equation.

I reckon journos and people reading have a bit of responsibility, when the consensus is that relevant or interesting dance music has to come from either london or berlin.

It's fine that it's played there in big numbers like it always has, but imo something silly has happened.

Producers comming up in either city will most likely be affected by the history of those cities and it can show itself in the output becomming retro for the sake of it or just too referential.

The reason is ofcourse Burial  , because he's the only one (I can think of) that made progress by doing that. Maybe Machine drum to an extent aswell, but imo his stuff is great but not original.

Ratking was for a second.

Future maybe?

But that's probably not even considered dance music.

I think this might be the first time in history that stuff with vocals is as progressive as the straight instrumental dance stuff.

the problem is people trying to be forward thinking imo. and listeners wanting stuff that's "fwd thinking" regardless of if they actually like it.

just make and listen to music you find enjoyable. don't turn it into an academic discipline.

I can't really tell if its progressive or not but I think hip hop is in general much more consistently good than UK dance music these days...I think the dance music crowd notices that too which is why factmag etc reps it quite a lot and hi hat rolls are all over the nuum shit now.

And yeah, i was gonna say burial is probably at fault for this lol. His shit feels nice and real tho.

That too. I swear sometimes its a competition to show off the cleverest "influence" or have the most cut up beats possible. It's too centered around some weird fetish/aesthetic, and not enough about whats actually banging.

Imo you have to seperate what producers say and how mags or radio or podcasts represent them, at least a bit. It's not the music that is trying to be something, it's a journo or deejay presenter stating something to carve a niche.
